Just Listen to Me, Mom

By Rene PetersPublished 3 months ago 3 min read
Patches holding me down

Oh no! She doesn't smell like herself right now!

I am going to lick her face and hands. Every part of them until she lays safely. Come on Mom, you know the drill. Lay your ass down!

"What are you doing? I promise I'm okay," she says to me as she starts to shake while rubbing my stomach.

Time to start to bite her hand. Not too hard or she will get hurt. Just lay down already!

I am going to pin her to the bed now. She isn't listening and I want her to stay safe. I finally pushed her down. Now she won't fall off her bed. Just to be sure, I'm going to lay on her legs. That way, she is unable to get out of bed.

"Everything is okay, Patches. Nothing is going to happen."

There she goes being in denial again.

I'm being less careful now. Her hands and face are covered in my slobber but she is still just trying to sit up. I lightly bite her nose just one time. That made her finally start to listen to me. She is finally laying down on her side. Time to curl up with her so she stays like that.

Patches curled up with me post PNEA

She's shaking a little more. I will push myself up to her. I know that will keep her safe.

Don't worry Mom. I'm here with you. I'll keep you safe! After all, I won't get walks without you being safe.

She is finally shaking less. It's almost over. The shaking stopped but now I hear her making noise. I see water coming out of her eyes.

What's wrong Mom? I thought I kept you safe. What is that coming it of your eyes?

Time to lick her face again.

Why does the water taste funny?

I like it so I just continue until the funny taste is no longer there. It was gone but there is a lot more water coming out of her eyes. I guess I should keep licking it off her face... You know, to help her.

Why is she wiping the funny tasting water off with her fur? I was trying to help her.

Now she is making a different noise.

"Thank you, Patches. You are such a good boy. You knew I wasn't okay and you did everything to keep me safe."

Well, duh. I want my treats and walks from you.

"I need to start listening to you more."

I tried telling you that, dummy.

"Can I have cuddles?"

What is she talking about? What are cuddles?

Why is she moving me? I just want to get off the bed now that she is fine.

Ooh! I can get belly rubs when she says that? Count me in!

She is giving me belly rubs and belly scratches. I love when she does that! Maybe I should lay right up against her. I'm laying on my side with my back against her belly.

Maybe this is what cuddles means? Why did she just put her face on my head?

I start licking her face again. This time it's because her face was on top of my head.

Is that what she wanted?

"Thank you, Patches. You're a good puppy. I love you."

I don't know what that last part means. Here's some more licks since it seems to make Mom happy.

* * *

This stuff did happen. I don't know if those were his thoughts but with his personality, it would not be a surprise at all. He really is the best non-certified alert dog a woman could ask for. He trained himself to warn me before PNEA and eventually, I realized what he was doing. He has stopped me from getting hurt during them when I felt fine and he told me.

This is so sweet. I’m glad that you have such a smart dog to help take care of you. It’s amazing how animals—like dogs—can pick up on things like this and warn their owners before they happen. And they just do it thinking that they should, not necessarily expecting anything but everyday care in return.
