How Movie "An American Pickle" Related To Helping Your Challenged Dog?

When we stuck, we tend to rethink our strength and where we did well, and go from there; though it's not always true when it comes to helping your stressed out dogs.

A while back my husband and I watched this movie from Seth Rogen “An American Pickle,” it’s an interesting movie.

One of the scenes that really made me think was when “old Seth” woke up 100 years later, being homeless, he went back to what he did the best:

Making Pickles.

Making truly “organic” pickles, cucumbers from the trash, glass jars from the recycle bins, using rain water; you name it.

It’s kinda gross.

Yet, I bet that’s how pickles were made 100 years ago - minus the cucumbers from the trash, but hey, who knows, the ugly and not so tasty would gone to trash cucumbers probably would be a good candidate to be pickled, right?

And the pickles are…

Unique, pungent, and LOVED by the locals.

When you feel you’re stuck and at the road end?

Think what you do the best, and go from there.

When your dog is struggling in life?

Think what he/she does the best, and…

Nope, not always go from there.

You need to create and recreate “where and when and what your dog is doing the best” that you can manage and control, based on what he’s doing the best now.

What does that mean?

Here’s one example out of many:

If your dog is doing well with a specific dog, then starting there may or may not be a good idea - especially if that dog is not yours, you won’t be able to always have that dog available to help your dog; when that dog is yours, it usually produce more challenges in different ways, where I’m not gonna go in details here.

Also I’ve found a lot of dog owners actually don’t really know when their dogs are doing well.

I had a client tell me the dog was really relaxed and chill inside the house, then I only discovered the dog was scared of dishwashers, laundry baskets and other house furniture.

Now, that’s not “doing well” inside the house.

Surely it may be “doing better” than when the dog is outside the house, so we would help the dog be more comfortable with household items inside the house first in this particular case.

Though the family was eager to get the dog walking better outside, we managed to get the dog improved, yet, if the dog is not doing “well enough” inside the house, the improvements outside the house will be very limited.

Here’s another case:

I’ve also worked with a client that had an extremely challenged dog, and the dog tends to do better outside the house because he can be really aggressive inside the house, especially when the owners present.

Now, this type of case is not common, yet it usually means challenging cases.

The owners did a lot of work inside the house per my instruction, because the challenge here is the relationship between the dog and the owners are heavily unbalanced/unhealthy.

And that needs to be worked on from “within” - inside the house as well as energy wise between the dog and the owners.

After the dog got to a certain point in the training, understanding the basics, we started working with the dog outside the house, and we can see the dog’s behavior improving.

In this particular case, determining where the dog “was doing well” was very challenging, because the dog is not doing well anywhere, and it took some time for us to see how we can help the dog to be more successful.

The reasons I share these with you?

If you don’t want to invest in training or seeking professional help, think the basics, think of your own strength and weakness, then evaluate where your dog’s actually “doing well,” try to be as objective as possible, and put your own emotions and stories aside.

Now, when you’re ready to get your hands dirty - your hands are probably already dirty because you have a challenged dog on hand…

Knowing with professional help, especially when you chose to work with me, you may live a less stressed life with your dog in much shorter time - because I probably will show you the things that you’ve been missing or not knowing this whole damn time, and give you that “aha” moment you didn’t know you needed.
