Do you have an attention-loving pup who always wants to be the center of your universe? Getting your dog to pay attention can feel like an impossible task at times, but with these five simple tips, you’ll find it much easier than you think. Whether you’re training your pet or simply looking to spend some quality time together, it’s important that you and your dog are on the same page and are able to communicate effectively with one another. Here’s how you can train your dog to pay attention effectively.

Teach your dog his name

Your dog will never stop paying attention to you if he knows his name. Start by calling him and giving him a treat every time you call out his name. When he's done eating, say Good boy! and give him another treat. Eventually, he'll associate hearing his name with getting yummy treats!

Establish a reward system

1) Make a game out of it: In order to get your dog's attention, you need to make it worth their while. Try playing fetch or tug-of-war. The reward is the fun game itself and not necessarily a treat.

2) Use a toy as a diversion: When you need the pup's attention for something important, like going outside or eating dinner, try giving them an appropriate toy as a distraction. This way they'll be able to stay focused on the task at hand without getting bored too easily.

Be consistent

Being consistent is the best way to get your pup's attention. If you're trying to get their attention, try using a word or phrase that they're used to hearing. For example, try saying watch me or who wants a treat? in a cheerful voice. If you want them to stop what they're doing and come over, try saying their name in a firm tone of voice. You might also be able to get their attention by making an interesting noise (like clapping) or tapping them on the shoulder.

1. Be Consistent

2. Say Their Name

3. Make An Interesting Noise

4. Tap Them On The Shoulder

5. Give Them A Treat

Use management techniques when necessary

If you find yourself in a situation where your dog is getting rowdy, it can be very helpful to interrupt the behavior by calling their name and giving them an alternate activity. For example, you could say Duke, come here or Sit down and then give them a treat. This will help teach the dog that when they hear their name or get called to do something good happens.

If your dog is paying too much attention to another person or object, try using a leash and harness. Hold the leash in one hand while holding the harness in the other. When they are distracted by someone or something else say leave it as calmly as possible and push gently on their back until they turn around towards you.

Have fun while training!

#1) Play a game. More often than not, dogs will play games like tug of war and fetch in order to get their owner's attention. By playing one of these games, you'll be able to channel their energy and train them at the same time. #2) Reward them while they are paying attention. This might seem counter-intuitive, but it's very important that you reward your dog for paying attention when you want them too. This will help them see the connection between paying attention and getting rewarded for doing so. #3) Change it up! If you do the same thing over and over again, there's a good chance that your dog will get bored or frustrated with the exercise.
