“And now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, Empawee of the Year award!”

The emcee scans the crowd and finds the two contestants sitting next to each other. They’ve both won several individual categories so far tonight, but this, this was the big one. Everyone knows they have both been campaigning hard and the tension is high.

“The first nominee is Chevrolet Delilah! Also known as Chevy, Chevy D, and the Queen Huntress.”

Chevy looked about and flicked her tail and gave a soft purr. She had already won Best Hunter, Best Prankster and Best Biscuit Maker. But the real surprise for her had been getting Best Napper, the competition for that was tough but her extreme positions and locations had put her over the top.

“The second nomination goes to Blitzen! Also known as Mr. VelvetEar, Sir Barks A Lot or simply B.”

At hearing his name again, Blitzen cocked his head slightly to the left and licked his chops. He too had already had a great night. Cleaning up in the Best Protector, Coolest Tricks, and Best Snore. But it was scoring Best Cuddler that had been a surprise, easing the pain of losing Best Napper, a category he’d worked hard on this last year.

Blitzen and Chevy exchanged glances. For someone who didn’t know them well, the looks would have appeared menacing, but this emcee knew better.

“The competition for this special honor has been really tough this year. Both nominees have gone above and beyond, and both are very worthy. Before we announce the winner, let’s review some of the highlights from their lives.

Blitzen and Chevy both came to live here at the same time. When I had agreed to adopt Blitzen the Beagle, a pronounced troubled dog and excessive barker, I knew my life would forever be changed. Blitzen had already been through several foster homes and all found him a bit too much to handle. But how could I resist those eyes? It was as though angels themselves had put on eyeliner around those big pools of brown that led straight to his sweet soul. It may be a challenge, but one I felt I could take on.

It was quite a surprise to receive the message asking if I would be open to also adopting a very small in size but large in spirit kitten. See, Blitzen had found Chevy abandoned, hungry and scared and so very small in a wooded area just outside a Chevy dealership. I was told he had been very protective of her and they had bonded strongly. Well, I’ve always loved cats and orange ones especially have always been a part of my life. So my rescue dog had an emotional support kitten? What could I say but yes?

Since this unlikely pair moved in, this house has been a nonstop show of love, but also sibling rivalry antics of comedic moments. Blitzen, after jumping up to get Chevy’s food bowl, again, was now being trapped outside as Chevy smacked his head every time he tried to come in through the pet door. After Blitzen had gotten to go on a walk, an annoyed Chevy was found lying on the bed right in front of his springboard and not allowing him up.

But oh the sweet moments, the cuddling and kissing, that had always been there too. For example, the way you two check on each other when one isn't feeling well, even going as far as to offer to 'clean up', or eat in other words, the other's throw up, which again is disgusting and unnecessary, but also still thoughtful. I will never grow tired of watching the two of you play or snuggle up with me for the night. And of course, it should be acknowledged what great helpers you have been while working form home. Chevy, your insistence to sit on my lap and lay your head across my arm while I'm typing, might not e the most ergonomically correct way of working, but I appreciate the support. And Blitzen you are always reminding when it's time to take a break for a walk or snack and when it is time to be done for the day. Not to mention your willingness to dress up for the work holiday zoom parties! I truly value your efforts to create a positive workplace."

What Chevy and Blitzen didn’t know, was that when interviewed about this award and asked why they should get it, both of them declined and stated that the other was more deserving. Chevy siting her eternal gratitude for Blitzen finding her and taking her in. Blitzen saying that he had felt lost, unwanted and misunderstood until he found Chevy, like she was a gift from a guardian angel.

“Blitzen, your love for this family is apparent in every bark warning us of the mailman, squirrels, the wind... and we are forever thankful for that. Chevy, you’re love is apparent in the purrs, the birds you’ve brought bedside and the large rat you placed under the Christmas tree.

I’m excited to announce, after much deliberation, that the winner is... "

I slowly open the envelope, taking a sick joy in the anticipation on their furry faces.

“Blitzen! And Chevy! That’s right, it’s a tie! You both deserve this award and much more. I love you both with all my heart.”

The two exchange another meaningful glance and then race to receive their treats. What a fantastic night, year, and life.
