Did you know that not only is December a month of giving, but that it is also National Cat Lover's Month? If they had their way, cats would celebrate this every month! Ha!

Here are 5 ways to show your love of cats this month:

1. Take your cat to the Vet. Our beloved pets need an annual medical exam just like we do. Taking your cat to the Veterinarian at the end of the year is a great way to make sure that your four-legged best friend is their healthiest before the New Year. Resolutions and Self-Care aren't just for humans! By making an annual appointment around a major holiday, it will be easy to remember each year. They will be so grateful - after - they get home from the Vet of course. Showing them the proper love and care with regular Vet visits will help prolong the life of your cat, ensuring you many happy years together.

2. Visit a local Rescue or Cat Cafe. By visiting unique places like Cat Cafe's or local rescues and shelters you are giving more cats the opportunity to socialize and be seen. Visiting these places and volunteering when you can, are simple and free ways to bring awareness to these adoptable animals and their need for forever homes. Cats are social creatures like us and may need a little extra TLC during times of change. Even if you are not up for adopting at the current moment you can still interact and play with the cats so they are socialized and ready for to be adopted to the right home at any time.

3. Share your love for cats by donating. Whether you donate your time or your money, December is the best month to give back! In fact, December is known for being “a month of giving” and many states (including Colorado among others) host a donation day, pulling in some of the largest donations of the year. You can give back to your local non-profits by monetary donations or physical donations. Check what they are requesting specifically. Some rescues and shelters will have a “Wish List” such as Amazon, etc. and others may ask for donations through a direct fund. Some organizations may even be requesting for more volunteers or help with intentional projects. No matter how you choose to give back, it always goes to the cats.

4. Gift yourself time with your cat. Life can get busy and hectic, especially around the holidays. Spending time with your pet can do more than bring a smile to your face; it can lower your blood pressure, steady your heart rate and decrease anxiety. Pets are often trained as seeing eye guides, Diabetic aids, companion animals and so much more. There are successful programs in hospitals, businesses, and prisons, where trained service animals come in to play. It has been proven to bring down stress levels, decrease anxiety and socialize both the humans and pets. So, whether you plan an elaborate date night with your cat or simply spend a little extra time engaging them in play, it will be beneficial for all.

5. Make your cat an internet star. Bored at home in quarantine? Aren’t we all? It seems like you’ve got the best cat on the planet and the world needs to know about it. If you can’t go volunteer or donate right now, maybe just use the magic you’ve got in your pocket to spread awareness of these beloved fur babies. Use all those extra photos your phone is full of to create your cat an Instagram account or have fun curating TikTok videos together. Whether it’s a fun side gig or your cat ends up an internet super-sensation, at least you get to spend a little more time with them.

Don't feel limited to these ideas above. Other cool ideas for getting in some quality time with your fur baby are: buying a harness and taking your cat for a walk in the neighborhood, playing with lots of toys for extra exercise (yes cats need to get moving just like us!) or growing them a cat safe indoor garden with cat grass, etc.

There are many ways to show your cat that you love them. Try some of these ideas out and see what works best for you and your cat. So get out and give back to the community this December and remember that it's all in the name of the cats.
