It was an early winter morning in Maine. The sun was rising and as it did so, it warmed the road ahead of me, wrapping me in a soft blanket of fog. I felt cofident of my future. I was filled with possibilities as I drove home.
It was an early winter morning in Maine. The sun was rising and as it did so, it warmed the road ahead of me, wrapping me in a soft blanket of fog. I felt cofident of my future. I was filled with possibilities as I drove home.
I chose to take this back road because it was so peaceful. A country road where the houses were set far back, leaving the wooded areas to retake the land. Sometimes During my drive I often encountered deer, owls, and an occasional moose. This road surrounded Ime to with my thoughts and beauty.

I chose to take this back road because it was so peaceful. A country road where the houses were set far back, leaving the wooded areas to retake the land. During my drive I often encountered deer, owls, and an occasional moose. This road surrounded Ime to with my thoughts and beauty.

Suddenly, a loud noise rudely brought me out of my thoughts. I pulled my car off the road and surveyed the damage . I pulled my jacket tighter against the cold and my rising fears. One of rear tires had blown out. I stared at it for awhile, hoping that it would fix its self, it didn't

I looked up and down the road, so much for isolation. I took a deep breath and headed towards the trunk. I smiled as I was thinking of my high school driver's ed teacher, who made sure all the women in the class knew how to change a tire. I opened the trunk and began to assemble the things I needed. I dragged the spare tire from its hiding place deep in the well of the trunk, and set up to complete the task.

By the time I had set the Jack up I was frustrated and crying, thinking that I would spend the rest of my life on that road, when I heard some rustling in wooded area around me. I stood up and went towards the sound, partly to get away from the tire. It was then that a dog came towards me. He was an Old English Sheepdog. I looked at his matted fur and fell in love with him immediately.i know felt hopeful and safe.

I explained the situation to him, and he licked my face and I laughed and hugged him. Just having him beside me encouraged me to continue. He was able to share his strength and warmth with me

The car took longer than I anticipated. The dog was beside me all the time, barking his encouragement throughout the process. Finished and put everything in the trunk. I turned to the dog to thank him, he jumped up on me and licked my face. I told him that I had a treat for him and search the front seat for a cookie I knew was there. When I turned to give the cookie, he had gone. I called to him, but he didn't come. I was overcome with emotions, we had bonded and I already missed him. His companionship is something I will never forget.

It has been over forty years and I remember it like it was yesterday.
