Cat Food & Feeding Supplies for Happy, Healthy Cats
What Cat Food and Feeding Supplies Our Sanctuary Keeps on Hand

While feeding your cat may sound easy, when you’re dealing with cats who are different ages and have different appetites and medical needs it changes things. After caring for kittens and adult cats, I’ve learned which cat food and feeding supplies we reach for over and over.
Kitten Food
We’ve found that the best kitten food is Wilderness Wild Delights and Purina Kitten Chow kitten dry food. Growing kittens can go through food quickly, especially when they’re still learning to eat well on their own.
Kitten Formula
KMR for kittens is another supply I want available when kittens need supplemental feeding or aren’t able to get everything they need from their mother. I prefer to have formula on our shelves than discover we need it when stores are closed.
I also pay attention to how individual kittens are doing. A kitten who is growing well and eating normally is very different from one who is struggling to gain weight or needs extra support. When there are concerns about a kitten’s nutrition, I follow veterinary guidance rather than trying to figure everything out from a food label.
Formula is one of those supplies you hope you won’t need, but when you do need it, you may need it quickly. I also keep feeding supplies available so we can respond without scrambling to find everything at the last minute.
Cat Food and Feeding Supplies
Now that we’ve discussed what to feed kittens, it’s important to also understand that adult cats have different needs. Our cats don’t all eat the same thing. We keep Cat Chow Naturals and Purina ONE urinary health food among the foods we use, depending on the individual cat’s needs.
Food isn’t something I like to choose based only on what looks appealing on a shelf. Age, health, weight, allergies, and veterinary recommendations all matter.
With multiple cats, feeding can also become a routine. I try to pay attention to who is eating, how much they are eating, and whether anything about their normal habits has changed. A cat refusing food can sometimes be more important than simply being a picky eater.
In a multi-cat household, it can also be easy to miss small changes. Knowing each cat’s normal eating habits makes it easier to notice when something is different and decide when a conversation with the veterinarian is needed.
Treats
Churu treats are useful for more than spoiling a cat. They can make medication time, handling, or a stressful moment a little easier for some cats.
I also like having treats available for positive reinforcement. Not every cat responds to the same reward, so finding something an individual cat values can make everyday care easier.
With a sanctuary full of cats, feeding supplies are part of our everyday infrastructure. I keep enough variety available so we aren’t caught unprepared when a cat suddenly decides their usual food is no longer interesting.
I also try to keep an eye on how quickly we are using everything. When you care for many cats, running out of food isn't a small inconvenience. It can mean an emergency trip to the store or a sudden change in what a cat is eating.
Over time, I’ve learned that having a basic supply of food, kitten formula, treats, and feeding supplies on hand makes cat care much less stressful. It gives me options when a cat’s needs change, and there is always something unexpected when you live with a lot of cats.
I keep the specific cat and kitten food and feeding supplies we use on our Benable cat-care list for anyone who wants to see the products themselves.
