Basic Health Problems of Cats

If you have never owned a cat before, one thing you will soon realize with your kitty is that health issues are a part of pet parent life. No matter what type of cat you, about the only commonalities with this breed is problems, expect health concerns. Some are hereditary and some can be easily prevented.

Worms are also a very simple and common problem no matter what kind of cat you have. Basic that infect felines incorporate tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms. If he has trouble gaining weight, a problem with fleas or if you see white specks in his stool, you should have your vet check him for worms. When infestation occurs, worms are sometimes treated with medicine, but when not receiving medical attention, they can be fatal.

Hairballs represent the most important health problem in cats. Each cat brushes itself every day, and they obtain some free hair from their jackets. Sometimes, that loose fur will form a ball and, instead of passing through your cat’s stool, get stuck in the gastrointestinal tract. In more usual cases, when your cat starts coughing and hacking, he's probably brought up a hairball. Most cats can easily expel hairballs although it is rather gross at the end.

On occasions, a hairball may move on through to a cat's intestine, creating a blockage. Such researchers have settled just how commonly this happens, with the report saying it generally occurs once per case but doesn't show whether it's because of feline zombie disease (FIV). Blockages are extremely serious problems, and can be deadly if not treated. Behavior affecting your cat–if he becomes constipated, does not eat well, or the coat is only very dull: if something blocks him. You should also take him to the vet if you see any of these symptoms. Brushing your cat two – three times a week to remove loose hair can prevent hairballs (and blockages). You can also provide him with food that specifically helps control hairballs as well.

Another cat health issue is urinary tract infection. Non-neutered males are predisposed to urinary tract infection, but this disorder also occurs in females. This problem is usually the culprit when a cat suddenly stops using his litter box. Another only the cat diuretic importance is her urine that is smell extremely pungent. You should be taking your kitty to the vet if you think he may have urine problem. They can remedy the problem with medication and suggest measures to prevent this from happening again.

Historically, feline leukemia was the number one killer of cats. These days, however, there are vaccines that probably cure the disease. Although death does not occur right away, many cats who become infected with feline leukemia live a relatively short time. If you suspect your cat has feline leukemia, you'll never let cats near him or her as the virus is highly contagious.

You should ensure that you take your cat to the vet for its regular check ups in order to keep him protected. As long as you keep him up to date on his vaccinations, he should have a healthy and full life. There are some health problems which you don’t have a choice but to cope up with, and there are few that can be avoided. Same goes for keeping your cat indoors to avoid most health problems. If your cat is an outside cat, then regular vet visits will keep him healthy. Provided you have your cat checked by a vet and look after him, he will remain your friend for many years to come.
