Feeding baby dolphins

In Montevideo, Uruguay, a baby dolphin was rescued.

Without the help of humans, this tiny dolphin would have been pitifully swallowed up by the sea.

Humans rescued the baby dolphin that was separated from its mother

Dolphins are mammals, and normally, baby dolphins stay with their mothers for at least 18 months.

The earliest weaning period for dolphins observed by humans is 4 months old.

This baby dolphin, found by humans, had not yet been weaned. The baby dolphin even had part of its umbilical cord when humans found it.

It wandered into the shallow water because it had not eaten for a long time and the baby dolphin did not have the strength to swim away.

When humans saw it, the baby dolphin was struggling in the seawater.

So the humans let the baby dolphin get food first.

Humans feed the baby dolphins

Dolphins, as mammals, need to drink milk just like humans.

But they "drink milk more often" than humans. Baby dolphins need to drink milk every 15 to 20 minutes, otherwise, they will feel hungry and weak.

For the dolphin to survive, the human rescuers patiently took bottles to feed it.

And not once, but every 20 minutes or so, the baby dolphin provides a back to food.

To help this dolphin, scientists also participated in the rescue. After scientists tested the baby dolphin, they knew its exact age: it was a 4-month-old baby dolphin.

So, humans left a special person who would come and feed this baby dolphin every day. The dolphin is also very smart, knowing that there is no food to leave this shallow water area, it keeps swimming around this area. When it saw humans coming, the baby dolphin would also swim over to eat.

But humans don't just help it get food.

Humans also have to help them learn the skill of swimming. In the dolphin group, the baby dolphins need the help of their mother dolphins to fully adapt to the sea.

Humans help baby dolphins learn to swim

The human rescuers will gently hold the baby dolphin by hand.

This is to help it gain balance, and baby dolphins generally cannot fully master the skill of swimming smoothly in the water.

Scientists will also come from time to time to give this dolphin some checks, after all, without the help of the mother dolphin, people worry whether the baby dolphin can successfully learn to swim.

This dolphin did not disappoint human expectations.

About a month or so later, the young dolphin, more than 5 months old, could already eat fish.

The human put first put some fish pieces and fed it to eat. This is a little bit similar to the way dolphins are fed in the oceanarium. Gradually, the human offered the dolphin some small fish.

The baby dolphin grows quickly, and with the help of humans, it successfully learns to swim and can catch some very small aquatic animals by itself.

Now scientists began to find out how to let the baby dolphin integrate into the wild dolphin population.

The human who rescued it does not want the dolphin to end up in an oceanarium. But in the wild marine environment, the dolphin wants to survive, then needs to integrate into the dolphin group.

Perhaps in a few months, when the baby dolphin is a little bigger, humans will find a way to help it find a stable group of dolphins to be a part of.

3 points about baby dolphins that may interest you.

Dolphins are fetal mammals and baby dolphins are born with an umbilical cord, which is usually bitten off by the mother dolphin. Sometimes the baby dolphin may be separated from the mother dolphin because of larger wind and waves, or when they encounter dangerous big fish.

Baby dolphins are not naturally afraid of people, and when they see humans in the wild, baby dolphins will swim over affectionately. Some oceanographers have argued that dolphins have always regarded humans as a kind of "distant relative".

If you encounter a baby dolphin, you need a professional oceanographer and dolphin breeder to rescue it properly. Baby dolphins are very whins are beautiful and intelligent animals, and helping them is a very valuable thing to do.
