8 Reasons Why You Need a Cat (or Cats) in Your Life

Everything You're Missing out on While Not Having a Feline Companion

By NixaphiraPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

As someone with three cats in the house, I want to let everyone know about the joys of having a cat or kitten in your life. So here are my top eight reasons to add a new member to your family.

1. They don't spend ALL day sleeping.

Cats are so chill. They'll spend hours sleeping in weird positions, stretched out in patches of sun, just enjoying life as it floats by. But it isn't all just lazing around all day; they go off the rails when they're excited. When my black cat, Taz (after the Tasmanian Devil from Looney Tunes), is in one of her playful moods she darts around the room chasing invisible mice, play fights with our other cats and even plays fetch! That's right, you heard me; she has a favourite blue mouse toy that she brings back to you when you throw it into the next room. These adorable little playful perks are one of the reasons why cats are so interesting. Their shenanigans will entertain you for hours and never fail to bring a smile to your face.

2. One Word: Catnip

Oh, the joys! Cats are entertaining enough in their usual playful moods, but if you let yours have a whiff of some catnip, things get taken to a whole new level. It really is like getting your cat high; their eyes go wide and they want to play with everything. When my black and white cat, Socks (yes her fur makes it look like she's wearing socks), gets her paws on some catnip she likes to roll around on her back playing with it in her paws. She's not usually very playful so it's great to see her playing like that. I'm sure that there are videos of the different reactions cats have to catnip strewn all over the internet, so why not take some time to enjoy their lovable silliness?

3. They make for great companions.

Every. Single. Time. I try to study at home, Taz will creep up to the table, watch me for a bit, and then, when she knows I'm most absorbed into my work, walk over to my book or laptop and plonk herself down on it. My first reaction is to think "Again?! Really?!" but then I look at her cute, gorgeous face and my heart melts and all is forgiven. I also like to think that this is her way of looking out for me by making sure I don't work for too long. The last of my three cats, Tiggs (she looks like a little black and white Tigger), also likes to join me while I'm working, but she's a little less annoying. She likes to perch herself on the corner of the table and remind me to fuss her every now and then while I'm working, another way of making sure I take breaks.

4. They're always there for cuddle time.

What could be better than being curled up in a blanket on the sofa watching your favourite program or reading your favourite book? Doing it with a cat, of course! When they come in to nap, the spot on the sofa next to you is cosy and warm, the perfect place for them to curl up and spend some time with their human. If they want some attention they might nudge your hand or look at you with their big eyes and then purr with glee when they get what they want.

5. They're good for your health.

Scientific research over the years has shown that there are many ways in which cats can be beneficial to your health. One of the main benefits is that they help you to cope with stress. I'm going to be very vague with this part as I don't know the in's and out's, but just look online and you'll find an array of articles talking about how cats improve health in their owners.

All in all, cats make great pets and companions, and as long as you feed, water and cuddle them, they'll love you forever.
