7 Easy Steps: How to Crate Train a Puppy

Crate training your puppy can be one of the most beneficial decisions you make for both you and your dog.

Crating your pup will keep him safe when you’re not around, and it can also help with potty training and give your dog a place to retreat when he’s stressed or scared.

Although crate training may seem daunting at first, it’s actually very easy once you learn the basics, and once you know how to crate train your puppy, you won’t want to go back!

Here are seven simple steps for crate training a puppy.

1) Pick the right-sized crate

It is important that the crate you choose is the right size. A dog should have enough room in the crate so it can stand up and turn around. If they are too big, they might not be comfortable or feel safe in the space. A pup will feel more secure if it has its own space and isn’t crammed into too small of an area.

2) Place the crate in the right location

Place the crate in an area of your house where it will be safe and comfortable for your puppy. If you want to crate train your puppy at night, place the crate in your bedroom or next to it. This way, you can keep an eye on them while you sleep and help them feel secure by being close. Place the crate in a location where they’ll be able to see their family members if they have any.

3) Put something special in the crate

You may want to put something special inside the crate, such as some blankets and toys or bedding that smells like home. When you take your puppy outside, make sure he doesn’t pee or poop in his crate before he goes in. When he’s done, praise him with treats, and then let him come out of the cage when he’s ready.

4) Get your puppy used to being in the crate

The first step is to familiarize your puppy with the crate so that he or she is not afraid of it. The best way to do this is by putting treats inside the crate and letting your pup go in, take them, and come out. You can also feed him or her in the crate if you want. When it’s time for bedtime, put the pup in their bed and close the door.

5) Start with short periods of time

Crate training is an important part of dog ownership and training. A crate is a safe place for your pup to hang out while you’re not home or at night when you’re sleeping, as well as a good place for him to go when he misbehaves.

It’s important that you start with short periods of time (say, five minutes) and gradually increase how long your puppy stays in the crate until he can stay in there for about four hours.

6) Don’t make a big deal out of it

Crate training is not as difficult as it may seem. All you need is your pup, an appropriate-sized crate, and some treats. To start, introduce your pup to the crate by opening it up and letting them investigate at its leisure.

After they’ve had enough time to explore, close the door and give them a treat through the bars of the crate. Repeat this process over several sessions until they are comfortable staying in the crate on their own.

7) Reward your puppy

After you have crate trained your puppy, reward them with treats and praise. This will help them associate being in the crate with being rewarded for good behavior.

If they cry when crated at night, it might be because they are getting overstimulated and need a break. Try taking him/her outside for 10–15 minutes before putting him/her back in the crate at bedtime.
