Owning a dog is a big responsibility—you not only have to invest time and money in the pet, but you must connect with them emotionally as well. Grooming is one of the basics of dog ownership. Grooming doesn’t necessarily mean fancy pampering sessions; instead, it involves keeping the dog clean, ensuring the dog smells good, and looking for any signs of issues. If you’re a new pet parent and you don’t know too much about grooming, here are five fundamental points you should know:

1. Hair Brushing Is Important:

While some dogs shed year-round, some shed seasonally. Shedding cannot be avoided, but you can reduce shedding by brushing your dog regularly with a dog hair brush. A dog de-shedder removes loose hair without cutting the dog’s fur, making it safe for any type of dog breed. Regular brushing not only helps remove the dog’s loose undercoat but also improves blood circulation as well. If your dog has long hair, prevent matting by using a dog brush regularly. Medium and short-haired dogs have to be brushed at least once every few weeks. Regular brushing helps keep the dog’s coat shiny and smooth; it also prevents accumulation of bacteria and dander.

2. Regular Bathing Is Important:

If your dog stays indoors all the time, it probably does not need to be bathed often. But if it likes to play around outside the house, a proper bath will keep the dog clean and smelling fresh. Use lukewarm water and a soap-free shampoo that’s made for pets. Lather most of the dog’s body, including its tail and underbelly, but avoid contact with their eyes and ears. Next, completely rinse off the shampoo, for any shampoo residue can make a dog’s coat dry and itchy.

3. Regular Nail Clipping Is Important:

If you don’t have experience trimming a dog’s nails, it’s best to leave the job to professionals. Cutting nails too short can be incredibly painful for dogs, and a painful first experience can make them hate the process forever. Try filing their nails with a rotary file if you aren’t confident about trimming. Dogs that regularly walk on hard surfaces typically don’t need their nails trimmed.

4. Maintaining Good Dental Hygiene Is Important:

Dental issues aren’t uncommon in dogs. Brush your dog’s teeth regularly to avoid tartar buildup and gum diseases. But don’t use toothpastes that are intended for humans, for these contain chemicals that can harm dogs. Instead, buy canine toothpastes. And for your first brushing, don’t start with a toothbrush—use a finger or two instead.

5. Keeping a Dog’s Ears Clean Is Important:

Routine ear cleanings help keep bacteria and yeast away. Look into your dog’s ears regularly—notice foul smells, inflammation, and other possible issues.
