Watching your furry best friend slow down with age is never fun. I mean, really, why can't they live as long as we do?

Adding even more to the stress of seeing your dog begin to lose mobility is the cost of vet bills and medications.

But the situation is not hopeless — there are holistic options you can consider. Studies show that several natural anti-inflammatory compounds can support your dog's joint health.

Companies like Gaia Provides are aware of the benefits of these science-backed natural alternatives. We purposefully create products to ease your dog's aches and boost mobility.

Here are five simple ingredients to keep your dog the spunky pup you love.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is an inflammatory disease that develops in the joints, resulting in swelling and pain. The word arthritis has Greek origins meaning “joint” (artho) and “inflammation” (itis).

There are different types of arthritis, but osteoarthritis is the most common and develops over time as the cartilage cushion between joints deteriorates.

As the condition worsens, severe pain and even the loss of complete mobility may happen. Although the cause is unknown, we know the chance of getting osteoarthritis increases with age.

At this time, there is no cure for osteoarthritis.

Arthritis in dogs

This affliction is not limited to us humans, and dogs of any age can also experience wear and tear in their joints. Old age, injury, and genetic causes are just a few reasons your dog can develop arthritis.

The only difference is your dog might not verbally express pain with the typical moans and groans. You may only notice the issue when they struggle to stand up or have trouble walking and jumping, especially in the beginning.

Osteoarthritis tends to develop in dogs' hips, elbows, and knees. The risk factors are high for certain breed types — such as Labradors and Golden Retrievers — and the chance your dog will develop arthritis also increases with age.

Studies show a whopping 50% of canine osteoarthritis diagnoses are between 8-13 years old and 80% of all dogs start to show signs of joint issues at age 8!

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids like cannabidiol (CBD) are a class of potent anti-inflammatory compounds made in both animals and plants. Our bodies produce endocannabinoids, and plants make phytocannabinoids.

These compounds work by binding to our endocannabinoid system receptors and regulate certain functions, including pain and inflammation. All mammals, including dogs, have an endocannabinoid system.

Research shows dogs with osteoarthritis can benefit from using CBD enriched products. In one particular study, canines were given CBD oil twice daily at a dose of 2 mg/kg of weight.

The results showed a decrease in discomfort and increase in mobility for dogs with osteoarthritis, without any observable side effects but with a mild increase in an enzyme called alkaline phosphatase.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice with an earthy flavor and vibrant yellow/orange color, commonly found in cuisines from India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

But the benefits of this herb extend well beyond a delicious meal; turmeric can also alleviate joint discomfort! Curcumin is one of the well-explored active compounds in turmeric linked to lower amounts of inflammation in the body.

One study found daily doses of a turmeric capsule at 500 mg twice a day for six weeks reduced pain and stiffness by more than 20%. The reduction in pain and boost in joint function from turmeric was linked to lower levels of the inflammatory C-reactive protein and TNF-α.

Other studies also conclude curcumin shows a “compelling justification” as a dietary supplement for arthritis issues.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin

Cartilage is a connective tissue that provides a buffer between bones at the joint and prevents friction and pain when we move. But as the cartilage begins to erode, the pad between the joints decreases, which results in pain and reduced mobility.

Glucosamine and chondroitin (Glu/CS) are two naturally occurring components of cartilage but can also be taken as a supplement to help slow the progression of joint deterioration.

A study found that dogs with osteoarthritis showed improvements in pain, weight-bearing, and condition severity after 70 days of Glu/CS treatment.

Methylsulfonylmethane

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring sulfur-based organic compound found in animals and plants. MSM is often an additive to support joint health, mainly when combined with glucosamine and chondroitin.

Regarding osteoarthritis, one study found MSM improved bone structure and range of motion in dogs with no significant side effects.

Other benefits included reduced levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and reactive oxygen compounds linked to inflammation.

Keep your senior dog(s) spunky and jumpy!

The evidence is in the science — using the right mix of ingredients can allow your dog to live a life full of outdoor adventures with you.

The earlier you give your dog joint supporting nutrients in their diet, they will likely remain active for many years!

If your pet is currently on other medications, you should consult your vet to help determine what natural products are safe to combine.
