In the United States, 67% of households have one or more pets. The most popular pet is the dog — over 63 million households own a pooch. You might have kept yourself from joining that number because you didn't think an apartment was an appropriate home for a dog. But there are plenty of pups that thrive in apartment living. If you're concerned about your small space or how you'll care for a dog, here are 15 great dog breeds if you live in an apartment (and a few tips on how to care for them).

Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is a fun-loving dog who just wants to make you smile. This pup will get along with other dogs, as well as young children. The breed is adorable and cuddly, so it's the perfect pooch for anyone who likes to relax and snuggle up on the couch with a pal. Your Bichon Frise will certainly enjoy the laid-back lifestyle.

English Bulldog

If you're looking for a sturdy dog who can handle apartment life, the English bulldog is for you. It's a stocky breed that's content to spend the day napping and will rarely bark, so your neighbors will never have anything to complain about!

Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkies are the perfect pet for anyone with an especially small flat. They can get plenty of exercise in a small space and they'll never complain about staying at home with you.

Pug

If you'd like a pet who will play, look no further. Pugs love to play with people and each other, so if you'd like more than one pooch in the apartment, go for a handful of pugs. You'll quickly fall in love with this adorable and playful breed.

Chihuahua

With the right training, a Chihuahua can be your best friend. They're the perfect apartment dog because they're small and don't need much space — but make sure you've had them properly trained so your neighbors aren't complaining about the yapper in Apartment #3.

Greyhound

You might not have been expecting a dog of this size on the list (after all, greyhounds are typically 60-70 pounds), but Greyhounds make surprisingly great apartment pets. They're gentle and calm and with a nice walk every day, a Greyhound can live happily in a small space.

Since your Greyhound does love to run, you'll want to make sure you have pet insurance. The last thing you want is for your beloved pup to have an activity-related accident when you can't afford the medical care. Pet insurance helps cover emergency visits to the vet in the case of an accident or sudden illness. The right pet insurance plan will help you get your pooch medical care when it's needed most. Compare pet insurance with iSelect and find the right plan for you and your trusty doggo (regardless of the breed).

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

This spaniel is happy to spend every day and night cuddling with you. They're small and friendly, so your neighbors and friends will love coming by for a visit.

Dachshund

The tiny legs say it all. Your dachshund will be happy to have a small amount of space.

Boston Terrier & Toy Fox Terrier

Really, any small terrier is the perfect apartment dog. They don't need as much exercise as a larger breed, and will happily stay inside with you.

Coton de Tulear

The Coton de Tulear is extra adorable and your friends who live in apartments that don't allow dogs will be extremely jealous. They're small, cute, and content to stay on your lap. You'll want to make sure you have plenty of time to spend with your Coton de Tulear. They dislike being left home alone and might take their fear or anxiety out on the furniture if you're gone too long.

If you know you'll need to be gone for a bit, give your pooch some CBD. While there's still more research that needs to be conducted about CBD, many swear by organic CBD oil for pets. It can give your pooch the nutrients, proteins, and fatty acids it needs to stay happy, healthy, and stress-free. If your pup is experience separation anxiety (a very common issue), a health supplement like CBD might do the trick. Talk with your veterinarian about whether high-quality CBD products are right for your pet.

Maltese

Are you working from your small apartment? Your Maltese will be thrilled. They love constant companionship and affection.

Poodle

The Toy or Miniature Poodle is the perfect apartment pet. They're brilliant and easy to train, so you'll never worry about it running away in the halls or having "accidents" in the house. If you're still worried about your pup mucking up your apartment building's immaculate curbside, consider hiring a professional residential pet waste removal company. They'll come to your apartment and clean it up for you!

Shih Tzu

Friendly, adorable, and soft. It doesn't get better than the calm and collected Shih Tzu.

Basenji

Basenjis are "barkless," (as in, they really don't bark) so if you're concerned about noise in the apartment, this is the dog for you.

There are plenty of incredible pets that will be right at home in your apartment. Find the perfect dog for you and learn how to best take care of it. You won't regret it.
