Fatherhood
Habitus. Runner-Up in Father's Footprint Challenge.
In the memory I am thirteen years old. It’s a cold night in September, a few months into what my dad and I call my science fiction initiation. I sit on the floor of my parents’ room, my back against the foot of their bed. My dad holds a mug of chai tea. His long legs stretch out on the floor. We stare at the TV that rests on my mother’s bureau and wait for it to warm up. It’s an old TV, the square kind with a curved screen I can rap my knuckles on to produce a satisfying hollow thunk.

My Dad. Content Warning.
"I love you more than all the stars in the sky and all the grains of sand in the world." These are the words my dad used to declare his love for me and my siblings. I can still remember sitting on his lap, awe-struck by the sheer magnitude of his love. "Woahhh, every grain of sand?! That's so many!" I would exclaim. He'd repeat those words until they were a mantra embedded deep in my heart.

Grapefruit as Fatherly Love. Runner-Up in Father's Footprint Challenge.
They take work. I’m standing behind the counter where my father peels a white grapefruit. He sections them according to their lines and continues to peel until they are no longer enveloped in the transparent casings and white ribbon. This debris he collects into a pile beside the cutting board.

Doing the Eddie Spaghetti
The above poem was written by me when I was around 12 years old. I sanded down the wood, stained it, shellacked the poem to the wood, and gave it to my dad for Father’s Day. It’s not the greatest poem, but I’m sure it meant the world to my dad at the time. He kept it with him for eighteen years, and it was given back to me by my stepmother after my dad passed away almost twenty years ago.

A Father's Love
Once upon a time, in a small town nestled amidst rolling hills, there lived a man named Benjamin. He was a father—a gentle soul with eyes that mirrored the depth of his love for his children. Benjamin had always believed that being a father was the greatest blessing life had bestowed upon him. He treasured every moment spent with his children, embracing the emotional journey of fatherhood with an open heart. From the moment his first child, Emily, was placed in his arms, Benjamin felt an overwhelming surge of love and responsibility. Her tiny fingers curled around his, and he knew that his purpose in life had forever changed. Benjamin vowed to be the best father he could be, to guide Emily through the ups and downs of life, and to instill in her the values that would shape her into a strong and compassionate individual. As Emily grew, so did Benjamin's love for her. He reveled in the simple joys of fatherhood—teaching her to ride a bicycle, attending her school plays, and cheering her on from the sidelines of countless soccer games. But fatherhood also brought moments of worry and sleepless nights. Benjamin carried the weight of his children's dreams on his shoulders, fearing that he might not be enough, that he might fall short of their expectations. When Benjamin's second child, Ethan, was born, his heart expanded further, as if love knew no bounds. He marveled at Ethan's infectious laughter and the mischievous twinkle in his eyes. Benjamin cherished the moments when he would read bedtime stories, his voice dancing with each character, filling the room with enchantment. Through Ethan, Benjamin rediscovered the world through a child's eyes, finding wonder and joy in the simplest of things. As the years passed, Benjamin witnessed the transformation of his children into young adults. Emily blossomed into a compassionate and determined young woman, ready to make her mark on the world. Ethan, too, grew into a confident and curious soul, eager to explore and learn. Benjamin couldn't help but feel a mixture of pride and bittersweet nostalgia as he watched them embark on their own paths. The emotional journey of fatherhood was never without its challenges. Benjamin stood by his children through their heartaches and disappointments, offering a shoulder to lean on and words of encouragement. He became their anchor in stormy seas, reminding them of their strength and resilience. Through it all, Benjamin's love remained a constant—a beacon of light guiding them through the darkest nights. As Emily and Ethan ventured out into the world, their father's love never wavered. Benjamin remained a steadfast presence, offering guidance and support whenever they needed it. He celebrated their successes and lent a comforting hand during their failures. Distance may have separated them physically, but their emotional connection bridged any gap, allowing them to lean on one another despite the miles that separated them. Years later, Benjamin found himself surrounded by his children and their families, gathered together to celebrate Father's Day. The air was filled with laughter, memories, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Emily and Ethan expressed their heartfelt appreciation for their father's unwavering love, acknowledging the sacrifices he had made to provide them with a life filled with love and opportunities. As they sat around the table, sharing stories and reminiscing, Benjamin couldn't help but feel a profound sense of fulfillment. The emotional journey of fatherhood had brought him immeasurable joy, but it had also tested his strength and resilience. Through it all, his love had remained unwavering, a steadfast force that had shaped his children's lives and, in turn, had shaped his own. In that moment, Benjamin realized that being a father was not merely a role—it was a lifelong commitment, an ongoing journey of love, growth, and self-discovery. The emotionaljourney of fatherhood had taught Benjamin the true meaning of unconditional love. He had learned that being a father meant being present in both the moments of joy and the moments of pain, offering a comforting embrace when needed and imparting wisdom when called for. As the evening wore on and the sun dipped below the horizon, Benjamin's heart swelled with gratitude for the blessings of fatherhood. He looked around at his children, now grown with families of their own, and felt a deep sense of pride in the remarkable individuals they had become. Each success they achieved, each hurdle they overcame, was a testament to the strength and resilience instilled in them through his unwavering love. Father's Day was a time for Benjamin to reflect on the countless memories he had created with his children—the bedtime stories, the family vacations, the shared laughter and tears. It was a day to honor the emotional bond they had forged, a bond that would withstand the test of time. In the twilight of the evening, as the stars began to twinkle above, Benjamin stood outside, taking in the serene beauty of the night. He closed his eyes, allowing the memories of his journey as a father to wash over him. The laughter of his children echoed in his ears, their smiles etched in his mind. In that moment, he made a silent promise to himself to continue embracing the emotional journey of fatherhood, to be a guiding light for his children and their children in the years to come. As the night deepened, Benjamin walked back inside, his heart full of love and gratitude. The flickering candlelight cast a warm glow over the room, illuminating the photographs adorning the walls—snapshots of cherished moments frozen in time. Each photograph told a story, a testament to the emotional tapestry woven throughout his years as a father. Father's Day was a reminder for Benjamin of the incredible privilege it was to be called "Dad." It was a day to honor not only his own journey but also the countless fathers who had poured their hearts into their children, shaping them into the remarkable individuals they had become. And so, on this special day, Benjamin embraced the gift of fatherhood with open arms, cherishing the emotional depths it had revealed within him. For it was through the joys and challenges, the laughter and tears, that he had truly discovered the boundless capacity of a father's love—a love that would endure, unbreakable and unwavering, for all the days of his life and beyond.
