A wedding cake is by far the most traditional cake served at traditional wedding receptions after dinner. In some parts of England, particularly in Kent and Sussex, the wedding cake traditionally is served at a wedding breakfast; however, the wedding breakfast does not always mean the entire meal shall be held late in the evening, for it can be during the early afternoon or early evening. In some areas, the wedding breakfast is held in a hall or reception-like building. In Kent and Sussex, where the wedding season runs for seven days from mid-April to early May, this traditional feeding follows the afternoon meal. Traditionally the bride's cake was cut by a member of the bride's family and given to her as a present.

It has been estimated that over one thousand years ago, wedding cakes were made out of fruit, sugar flowers, nuts, and/or dates. Sugar flowers are thought to have first been used in 10th century Europe. In the United States, wedding cakes most often are made with white icing. However, since cakes were often eaten before the wedding vows, many couples today use buttercream or royal icing to decorate them. Sugar flowers and nuts, however, are the most common flavor for wedding cakes.

Some early wedding cakes had a "cut in" design where the top of the cake had a piece cut out so the bottom of the cake to fit perfectly around the bride and groom's heads. The "cut-in" design became popular because it allowed the bride and groom to have their heads cut exactly to their exact measurements. Also, during those times, it became customary to give each guest a small slice of the cake to take home. The practice of cutting the cake into pieces is said to have started in ancient Greece.

Although it is not clear how or when this tradition developed, most brides still choose to receive small pieces of cake from their guests.

In general, wedding cakes usually contain three basic ingredients: the cake, buttercream, and meringue. The cake also referred to as the cake topper, is what serves as the base of the cake. It may contain several recipes such as ones containing fruit, chocolate, or various flavored cake fillings. Buttercream is a mixture of butter and cream that is used to enhance the taste of the cake. Meringue is a mixture of egg whites and sugar with water that is used as the liquid glue for the cake to come together.

Today, many modern wedding cakes have come a long way from their traditional predecessors. For example, at some weddings, the cake toppers are actually edible flowers. In other cases, there may be real edible flowers, while in others, no edible flowers are included in the cake topper design. If you are planning to have an edible cake topper at your reception, you may even choose to order flowers and edible foliage instead. The baker will supply you with the necessary baking pans, utensils, and instructions on how to make the cake.

The most popular types of wedding cakes today include the wedding cupcake, which is a smaller version of the traditional wedding cake. As the name suggests, it is cupcake-shaped. The tier is similar to a traditional wedding cake, except it has only one layer. Many toppers have a design that includes the tier and flowers. However, they also use royal icing and sometimes edible gold and silver lace to enhance the appearance of the cake.

Another popular type of wedding cake today is the quickie wedding cake. These cakes are smaller in size than the large traditional varieties and are considered lighter fare by some. However, these tasty treats are loaded with flavor and often contain a variety of flavors. One option is to purchase the pre-packaged ones, which are available in several flavors, such as gingerbread, chocolate, and lemon; however, you can also make your own special flavors of your choice.

In addition to choosing from ready-made flavors, there are also those that are customized according to the taste of the bride and groom. For example, if the bride prefers something with a hint of vanilla, then the wedding cakes will be designed with a hint of vanilla. If she wants something with a hint of raspberry, then the wedding cakes can be made with a hint of raspberry, or even with citrus flavors. Whatever your preference, there is definitely a delicious option for you!
