Sometimes the best course of action is not clear until you have listed and considered your alternatives. The following paragraphs help you to point out what the experts think is important. I dreamed of visiting the Phi Phi Islands. I first read about these beautiful remote islands off the coast of Phuket 10 years ago and then, like everyone else, I was mesmerized by the amazing scenes shown in the movie, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

After watching the movie for the second time, I decided that Phi Phi would one day be my honeymoon destination. When you got there with your bride a few weeks ago, you can guess what I expected. Most tourists arrive by sea from Phuket or Kirby, but we decided to fly from Phuket Airport using a new seaplane service, Bluewater Air. As we landed, I saw a spectacular view below - rising cliffs and dense forests lined with golden pieces of sand.

We boarded a speedboat and a few minutes later we reached the pleasant small village of Ton Sai Bay. Although it is commonly called Phi Phi "Island", also called Pee-Pee, there are two islands. The biggest of the two, Phi Phi Dawn, where everyone lives, like the little Phi Lee, is uninhabited. The main focus of Phi Phi Lei is Maya Bay and its beautiful beach, where the film was shot. Phi Phi Don has some fantastic resorts close to the coast, but most of the accommodation is in the village of Ton Sai. The settlement is built on a piece of sand between two steep hills, with the sea on either side. My first surprise when I arrived was that there were no cars on the island.

Porters use handcarts to deliver goods from the pier to your hotel room and the fastest transport cycle. There are small, winding streets between hotels and bungalows, full of small stores that offer everything from 24-hour internet services and diving packages to pizza and pancakes. After booking at our hotel, Phi Phi Island Cabana, we set off for a swim in Iron Heart Bay, just a few meters away. It was amazingly shallow and we would occasionally go out for a company with seafood or Thai fishermen. As the sunset, we lay back in the water and saw the light of waterfront cafes and bars shining under the palm trees. We were in heaven!

Later that night, we celebrated our first night in Phi Phi with a cocktail at Jungle Bar, a beautiful beach bar lit with flames. We met some young Scandinavian backpackers and they suggested we go to Siao Bella, an Italian restaurant on the coast for the best pizza in Thailand. My wife chose fresh seafood shrimp, but I ordered a pizza that lived up to her reputation. Then I talked to the Italian owner, who told me he had been on Phi Phi for over 10 years. His family stays in Phuket during the week, but he prefers a simple life in his bungalow on the beach.

The next morning, we rented a speedboat and set out to see Maya Bay, the cave where most of the filming was done. Surprisingly, it is dangerous to watch every day, despite the crowds. Get there early - or before sunset - and you should have at least part of the beach. When the day-trippers ferry arrived, we went snorkeling on the other side of the island. I've gone snorkeling before, but this was special.

It was as if I was walking through a sea wonder, with brightly colored fish swimming around me. My wife was nervous at first, but later we had a hard time getting her out of the water! Then we toured the island, stopping in the quiet little creeks for a swim. Sometimes the most important aspects of a topic are not immediately apparent.
