Planning a wedding can be an overwhelming experience. However, nothing is as overwhelming as choosing wedding gifts. There is so much to consider, so much to plan and it’s good to know what is appropriate to ask for. This is why a wedding registry has been invented.

So, what exactly is a wedding registry? Simply put, wedding registry is sort of a wish list that a couple puts together and that makes gift finding for guests a bit easier.

It’s an online or in-store service that helps soon to be married couples choose what they want and need. Once this has been done, the list of all the chosen items is given to the guests to purchase the gifts. You can see how this makes life easier both for the couple and the guests.

The following question is—what kind of gifts to ask for?

The gifts you ask for will depend on you. Pick things you will actually use and also be sure you pick them together—you’re going to live together so it only makes sense that you do it together. In addition, make sure you register for a lot of gifts with different price ranges so that guests have options.

Usually, the gifts can be put in different categories—home gifts, travel, recreational gifts, and monetary gifts, to name a few.

Here are some of the gifts that almost every married couple need.

Home Gifts

If you’re going to go for home gifts, you can start by picking things you will actually need.

Kitchen and dining room

The kitchen and dining room usually need the most attention and need to be equipped with a bunch of things. Picking gifts for these rooms can be tricky. Many times, we just make a list of a bunch of things and appliances that we won’t even need.

That’s why making a list is a good idea. What most couples include in their lists and what is definitely something you will need is a cookware set. No matter how good or bad of a cook you are, at some point you’ll need to whip out some pots or pans and make something. So, cookware is a must on your kitchen gift list.

Cutlery and eating utensils are other necessary items. You’ll need to eat with something and you’ll need to cook with something, so it only makes sense to have these on your list.

Somehow, the next logical thing to include in your list is a couple of sets of dishes. If you like to entertain, then a set of 12 is ideal for you. You can choose any pattern and color you like and just put it on the registry list.

Glasses—from everyday glasses to those crystal wine glasses that you just must-have. Glasses are a great gift and a useful one as well. Plus, you’ll be using them for many years to come.

When it comes to appliances, this is where you need to be careful. This is because many couples pick out things they will barely even use in the future. Be wise about picking appliances—don’t clutter your kitchen with items you’ll never even use.

Choose appliances you will need such as ovens, electric kettles, blenders, toasters, coffee makers, mixers, pressure cookers, etc.

Other good ideas for kitchen items include chef’s knife, serving bowls, cutting board, thermometer, pepper mills, and so many other things your kitchen might need.

Living room

The most typical gifts couples pick for their living room include vacuum cleaners and TVs. Every house needs a vacuum cleaner to keep it clean, that’s why you can never go wrong if you put a vacuum cleaner on your registry list. Another good idea is the TV. TV is definitely something you’ll be using often.

Styling your living room to make it homey and comfortable is what every home needs. That’s why your list would probably need a couple of comfortable occasional chairs that can make your living room feel inviting and cozy.

Then comes the styling of your living room with decorations such as vases, frames, pictures and any other type of wall art. Maybe even a couple of pillows and throw blankets.

Bathroom

Bathroom items are also a good idea to put on the wedding registry list. When you’re making your home cozy and inviting, your bathrooms should also be styled and decorated.

So, what can you put on the registry list that can help you make your bathrooms a nice, inviting place? Well start with obvious things like towels—bath, hand, and washcloths—choose the color and style you want and that’s it.

Right after towels, you can pick out the bath mats and rugs you want, maybe even shower curtains too. Then choose the kind of bathrobes you want—a matching pair perhaps?

Other items may include scales, hampers, vanity mirrors, soap dishes and containers, lotion dispensers and baskets.

Style your bathroom however you like and put all the items you need on the list.

Bedroom

Yes, bedroom items are also placed on the wedding registry gift list. Upgrade your bedroom with new items now that you’re getting married.

Choose comfortable bed sheets and pillowcases you like. Also, don’t forget comforters and duvet covers and even duvets too. Maybe a couple of pillows as well.

Travel gifts

Every married couple needs a few traveling items. If you’re not going on a honeymoon right away, you’ll do it eventually. That’s why you need some travel items and a good way to get them is by placing them on the registry list.

An absolutely necessary item when you’re traveling is the luggage. Pick out the luggage bags you like the most and place them on the list. Additionally, you can add garment and toiletry bags as well.

No smartphone compares to a camera, so be sure to put a camera you want on your list too.

This wedding registry trend dates back to the 1920s and it’s still going strong. It definitely makes wedding planning and picking out gifts much easier. These registries can help you outfit your home with items you actually like and need. So, don’t be ashamed and use a wedding registry like so many couples do.
