A Christmas Surprise

Best short break ever

We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. We weren’t expecting much. The advertisement emphasized “cozy” and although the photographs showed largish rooms with “everything one could wish for to make a short or long stay comfortable” we had our doubts. They couldn’t fool us. We knew how they angled the camera to make a tiny “couldn’t swing a cat” place look like a mansion. But we couldn’t afford a mansion, could we? Some of the places I’d seen online were lovely but way beyond our budget. This would have to do. The reviews were good at least.

We parked the car and my husband sighed. This was the first Christmas that it was to be just us. We needed a break from everything. No, we deserved a break. Things at home had got out of hand. The family had been giving us grief. It was argument after argument over stupid stuff. Never mind that, now we were going to enjoy some “us” time; just the two of us.

The snow was falling softly as we opened the car doors and gingerly stepped onto the icy path leading to the cabin. We trudged up towards the little door. Gosh it was cold! My fingers were starting to ache already. We’d better get inside and get the log fire going.

After scraping a mound of snow away from the entrance with his bare hands, Alan tried to open the door. It wouldn’t budge. It was stiff and he had to pull really hard. It took ages. My feet were feeling numb now.

Eventually the door fell open followed closely by our mouths! This place might look like a cozy A-frame cabin on the outside but inside it was enormous! Beyond the entrance there were four good sized bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a games room and a media room. There was even a water fountain feature in the hallway. The kitchen was fabulous! All expensive brand appliances, I didn’t know what to think. The fridge was bulging with food and there was a note on one of the bench tops which read “Please help yourselves to as much food and alcohol as you like. Enjoy!” We couldn’t believe what we were seeing. Was this for real?

There were several different entertaining areas; so many that we couldn’t decide where to sit at first. We eventually settled on a deep comfy corner lounge. We were stunned. We were delighted. This had to be the best secret ever. And it was warm inside; there was ducted reverse cycle air conditioning to ensure that. So, in a way the booking agent’s description was spot on; it was cozy!

There was a large bar area stocked with drinks. We helped ourselves, as directed, and as we walked, holding our drinks, we explored further. Around the corner we were amazed to find an indoor heated pool! We made good use of that.

And the sound system was out of this world. Surround sound throughout. We had eighties hits blasting out all weekend.

Forty-eight hours was just not long enough to enjoy it all. We felt like royalty. It was amazing.

Eventually the time came for us to leave. Check out was 10 am.

We drove home feeling refreshed and ready to take on anything that the family or the world might throw our way. We could take on anything.

A few days later I received an email from the booking company asking me to write a review. I wrote “Best Christmas ever. Thank You!” After all, we might want to return to the “Cozy A- Frame cabin in the snow” one day.
