Everyone deserves to have the best possible smile. After all, it is one of our best assets. But what happens if your teeth aren’t just up to that standard? Many people experience teeth problems, whether it’s an overbite or gaps, and resort to professional methods to straighten and align them properly. This can range from braces to surgery to Invisalign trays. Invisalign trays have recently become a very popular ‘fix’ for those who need to gradually move their teeth. Why Dental Patients Are Flocking to Invisalign

What is Invisalign?

Essentially, Invisalign trays are virtually invisible braces which are custom fitted to gradually move your teeth little by little. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign trays require you to put them off, take them off and clean them. The end goal is for your teeth to align in the correct and most suitable position for your oral health which is done by frequently changing the trays. Each week or two, the tray will be changed to ensure the teeth are constantly being moved and it is recommended that you wear these for at least 22 hours a day (don’t worry, you can take them out to eat!).

After a couple months, hopefully, your teeth will move to the position that you want depending on how bad they were in the beginning. You’ll be able to have a review with your dentist to discuss any future options if needed.

Why?

There are many reasons why people choose to use Invisalign. Not only does it give you the smile you deserve, but it can also help resolve any underlying problems in terms of your oral health. While Invisalign can’t help severe problems, they’re perfect for those with mild issues. The 4 most common reasons for getting Invisalign are listed below:

Gapped teeth: Some patients experience gaps between their teeth. While this isn’t a huge issue, having gaps can make your gums more vulnerable. Essentially, your teeth won’t be able to protect your gums from any infections. As a result, it can lead to health issues such as periodontal disease – a bacterial infection which attacks the tissue that is connected between your teeth and your gums.

Underbite: An underbite is when your bottom teeth are beyond your upper teeth. As a result, this can cause painful jaw and joint problems, as well as wearing your teeth out. All which can cause issues for your oral health.

Overly crowded teeth: If your teeth are overcrowded, this could lead to crooked teeth. Crooked teeth are a problem many people experience and can cause tooth decay as well as a higher chance of getting gum disease. Getting this fixed is extremely beneficial.

Open bite: An open bite is essentially when your upper teeth and your lower teeth can’t physically make contact with each other when your mouth is closed. Therefore, not only will you find it hard to chew, but it can also be extremely painful, and you might be prone to bigger health issues.

All of the above are fairly mild problems which don’t always have to be fixed, but it is recommended and can easily be done with the use of Invisalign.

Why is it the best option?

Obviously, there are other options to straighten and align your teeth correctly (e.g. braces), but Invisalign trays might be the best solution. The biggest perk is that they are virtually invisible (compared to braces anyway). While it’s nothing to be embarrassed about, some patients prefer their treatments to be less noticeable (plus they will never clash with an outfit!)

Also, let’s not forget about the hygiene factors. While these trays require you to remember to keep them in, it also means that they can be taken out if causing too much pain and can be easily cleaned – as opposed to traditional braces which are attached to your teeth and require serious cleansing (especially when eating messy foods).

Lastly, Invisalign will cause less discomfort than other methods. They’re easily taken out and there won’t be any rubbing on your gums nor wires poking in your mouth.

While there are many benefits to Invisalign, just remember that they only work for those who need minor changes. If you have severely crooked teeth, for instance, then these trays may not be an option, but if you consult your orthodontist, they will be able to schedule an appointment to figure out the best options for you.
