Varifocal glasses: Are they difficult to get used to?

Is Getting Used To Varifocal Glasses Easy?

It is not a surprise that our eyesight diminishes as we grow older. People start to have a hard time seeing nearby objects clearly in their 40s. This problem is known as presbyopia or nearsightedness. But if they already have farsightedness, they’ll need vision correction for both. This is why people use varifocal glasses to have a better near vision.

What are varifocals?

Varifocal lenses have three different focal powers divided by two invisible lines on the lens’ surface. The top-most portion gives a clearer distant vision beyond an arm’s length. The mid portion helps you see objects at an intermediate or at an arm’s distance. The lowermost part of the glasses is meant for close vision for things within 35cm of your eyes.

Varifocal lenses sound like an appealing idea to have a seamless look (with their unobstructed surface) and have a vision clarity for different focal lengths. Instead of carrying two different glasses, people can have only one pair that will perfectly cater to all their vision requirements.

But, varifocals are relatively more costly than your regular bifocals and prescription glasses. Even if you buy cheap glasses, you can never be assured of their quality.

Is it difficult to adapt to varifocal glasses?

Varifocals are generally very easy to adapt to if you have the one with the right prescription. Initially, you will have some trouble adjusting your head and eye movements to see at different vision lengths. However, with time, most people get used to their glasses and even become comfortable with wearing them all day long.

When you buy prescription glasses online, make sure you give the right information such as your prescription number and the distance between your pupils.

How long will you take to adapt to progressive glasses?

We wish that we could give you a definite time period but adjusting to varifocals differs from person to person. Where some people may adapt to them within 2 or 3 days, some might take almost a week or even more than that.

It is very normal if you feel peripheral distortions after you have bought a new pair of varifocal glasses. To ensure that you adapt soon, only use good-quality varifocals and seek help from your optician about how varifocal lenses work.

There are only a few people that stop using varifocals because they couldn’t get on with them. If you are one of them, talk to your optician to know what other options you have.

If you are buying prescription glasses online, make sure you check the fitting of the frame and always buy from a website that has an easy return policy.

Tips to get habitual to varifocals

As we have mentioned earlier, getting used to varifocal glasses depends on the individual. But, there are some tips that will help you adapt more quickly and easily to your new pair. Here is how you can make an easy switch:

Consistency is the key

Wearing your varifocals in the morning and removing them in the night at dinner with your family is not how your eyes and brain are going to adapt to the change. Even if you are not comfortable with wearing glasses, you must wear your varifocals for as long as you can. The longer you wear them, the quicker you will get used to them.

Don’t go back to your old glasses

Avoid switching between your old frame and varifocals to give your brain the time to get accustomed to the new lenses.

Learn head positioning

Do not move your eyes too much to focus on different distances. Rather, learn different head positionings to see objects with more clarity. For example, when you are reading something or looking at objects that are close to you, move your chin slightly upward and look downward.

Seek help

If you have used all of these tips and are still having trouble with your progressive lenses, ask your optician for help or turn to your friends or relatives who also wear varifocals.

Varifocal glasses are not that tricky to get used to. Around 98% of varifocal users easily adapt to them without feeling any visual discomfort.
