When you are out and about, whether you are driving a few hours to visit someone or you are on a road trip, the costs can really add up. Food, gas, and other essentials can make your drive cost even more than ever imagined.

It doesn't have to be this way. Here are some tips to save money on the road.

Plan out your route. Though you may want to drive wherever the wind takes you, it is not always fuel efficient. If you end up taking a different path, you could add hours to your trip. Not only will you end up stopping more, but it is also going to cost you more in fuel.

If you want to be more fuel efficient, taking the quickest route is a good idea. Scenic routes are nice, but it might not be worth the extra tank of gas that it took to see everything.

Use apps to help you find the best prices on gas, no matter where you are. CheapGas is an app that allows you to find the cheapest gas prices when you are on the road. You could really save a bit of money even if you find gas that is one cent cheaper per gallon. If you fill up your tank several times, that really adds up!

Maximize your mileage. There are plenty of ways that can help you with your mileage. Driving too fast on highways will waste gas. Instead, try to stick to the speed limit at all times. Starting and stopping is also hard on your mileage, so it is better if you are able to drive at a steady pace. Cruise control can help, if your vehicle has it.

You should also go over your vehicle closely before you leave. By making sure that your vehicle is in good shape before you leave, you are less likely to have it break down while you are on the road. Ensure that your tires are at a good pressure and all your fluids are filled. If you can afford to have your mechanic look at it before you leave, it is even better!

Pack plenty of snacks and drinks. One of the most expensive parts of road trips happens at convenience stores. Not only do most people stop and buy coffee, but they also get more snacks than they really need, simply because they are hungry. A few snacks can add up and blow your budget.

Take advantage of free attractions. While you are out traveling, there are many places that you can stop that won't cost you a dime! In fact, you might get a lot out of these attractions. Spend time at the beach, go to a National Park, find a place to hike, and much more. No matter where you go, you should be able to find plenty of things that you can do that won't cost you much (if anything).

One of the best ways to save money while on a road trip (or a long drive) is to take the shortest route. Though scenic routes are nice, they can add a lot of time (and gas) to get where you are going. You may also want to check out some apps to find the best gas prices while you are out.

It is also important to make sure that your vehicle is ready for the long trip. Then, drive sensibly. Sticking to the speed limit (instead of going eighty miles an hour) maximizes your fuel efficiency.

It is also important that you bring plenty of drinks and snacks. Stopping at convenience stores can really add up. Many people spend ten to twenty dollars at every stop. If you stop every few hours, that can really cost you!
