The Top 7 Tips for Sewing Newcomers

More and more people out there are beginning to take up sewing in a small or big way. Sewing itself is nothing new as there have been many instances in the past where sewing had taken off in a big way. However, one can see that today, it is experiencing a resurgence of sorts. A lot of people who are new to it are still a bit clueless as to how to go about the process and what to do to get the best results. There are no two ways about that for sure.

Whether it is a heavy duty sewing machine or a light sewing machine that you possess, there are a few key factors to remember such as sewing machine oil. Without taking care of that, there would be hardly any point of you continuing sewing for a prolonged period of time. However, all is not lost as there are a few tips that one can keep in mind instead of thinking that a certain level of expertise is required. The latter is not that necessary, but the former will certainly help you out in more ways than one.

For all the newcomers, here are the top seven tips to put your worries to rest:

  • The same colour of threads: This aspect is a lot more important than you realise as people barely even give threads a second thought in general. Be it in the top or bottom spools, make sure that you use the same colour. You should use different colours only for decorative stitching.
  • Be sure to prepare your fabric: This means making sure that it is smooth as well as flat. That way, stitching will be a lot neater and the best rule to follow is to always make sure to press all of the fabric before starting any kind of sewing work.
  • Ensure that your stitching is straight: This is undoubtedly the most important aspect of stitching—making sure that it’s straight. Since the sewing machines come with marked measure lines on the plate, make sure that you keep the edge of your fabric running along it. Also, remember to stitch slowly if you are just starting out.
  • The importance of neat curves: This can be quite hard to do at first, but one needs to take things slowly to ensure that the process is completed all the way through. Once you stitch slowly, remember to ease the fabric round gradually using both hands.
  • Clean your machine on a regular basis: A lot of fluff tends to get caught in the teeth and this will prevent your machine from working smoothly. If you sew often, getting your machine cleaned every day is a must. Once you go online, you will find the nearest sewing machine centre and repair shop.
  • Playing around with stitches: Once you have a good idea of the different kinds of stitches that your machine is capable of, you will be all set to go. From zig-zag to different circular patterns, you can play around with all of them to figure out which you like best.
  • Take good care of your needle: Changing your needle on a regular basis is recommended as they tend to become rather blunt with use more often than usual. Most of all, do your homework and find out which needle can be paired best with your particular sewing machine.

At the end of the day, it is up to you to keep all the above pointers in mind if you want to have a fun and relaxed time while sewing. That is for sure. After all, since you are just starting out, you would ideally not want things to be too difficult for you. That way, you may very well end up getting too discouraged to even start the process of sewing. Now, that is not a desirable situation by any means.

More than anything else, you just need to remember to be as patient as possible. That is the key. Once you let the process take its own time, sewing will come a lot easier for you than you think. Don’t make the mistake of rushing the process as that could very well lead to you making more than a couple of errors on the way.
