I have published a short form on Medium in the evening before I hit the bed. Usually my post would only bring in 10 views on an average day, if I were lucky 30 views would have been the top stories of my life. However I woke up the next morning feeling surprised, it has garnered close to a hundred views while I was sleeping. In case you are wondering which article I was referring to, you can check out the link below.

What was surprising wasn’t the article, but the experiment I was conducting. It was the first time I have used capitalizemytitle.com to check for the headline rating on my title and I want to do a small experiment to see if it works.

I don't usually bother much about my titles, I always believe content is far more important than the title. Like the saying goes - "don't judge a book by its cover". Apparently I couldn't have been more wrong. At this age of interconnectedness, there is simply too much information floating around for people to read and it isn't wise to read everything that comes your way. These days one has to be smart in choosing what he reads or else he would run out of time fairly quickly. The only way to "judge" if an article is worth reading it really by its cover. Yes I know, it goes against the saying, but times has changed so I have to catch up too.

The initial topic I wanted to write about was Rejuvenation. Upon checking, the score given was a pathetic 37. So it was a no-no to publish my article with this title. But it is an important information to note, because for the first time, I rejected my own title base on the assessment from a website.

I then spend the next few moments playing with different combinations before I hit “My Simple Life”, which has a score of 63. I wasn’t quite impressed so I continued to experiment with a variety of other titles, until I eventually end with “My Simple Joy, My Simple Life”, which was 76, the highest score I had ever recorded with any combination.

I thought I found my title after spending more than 30 mins on the website. But getting the title was only the beginning. What the hell am I going to write about “My Simple Joy, My Simple Life”? I don’t want a clickbait title to lure my readers in, only to ask them, have they eaten already? That would really suck and be a complete disappointment. Sketching up powerful content to go with a powerful title is hard work. Eventually, I ran out of time to think up a 4 min essay and decided on a poetic short form just to see how far it can go.

The next thing I discovered this morning was that having a good title is indeed important to boost views. My article got 90 views in hours! It may not seem a lot compared to top writers, but hey I am a newbie, to have 90 views in hours is already unprecedented. So I click into the stats to examine the breakdown.

As you can see 90% of my viewers are external traffic which is non paying. So effectively my earning is still zero. The article continues to spike and at the time of writing this article, which was only 30 minutes later, it has already passed 100.

In conclusion, having a good title will bring higher traffic. This is beyond doubt. Having higher views does not guarantee higher earnings, this is something I have just discovered. In the end, it is still worth churning out articles with SEO optimised title. What is important to a writer is to have readers willing to read his work, whether or not his work can make money, I would think it is a secondary question.

Now that I have discovered this tool, I am going to use it to help me with my topic selection whenever possible. For now, I am pretty happy to celebrate the increase in views, paying or non-paying, period.
