When you’re painting your home’s interior, you may think that it’s going to look like everyone else’s when you’re done, but it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, once you learn a few tips and tricks for painting your home’s interior and making it look spectacular, you don’t have to worry about having a home that is boring and drab. In order to make sure you’re creating your dream home, below are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind.

1. Choose the Right Color

Many homeowners choose a neutral color when painting their home’s exterior, which is a great idea if you’re thinking of selling it soon. The thing is if you’re planning to live in it for a lot longer, why not choose some unique, fashionable paint colors instead? For gorgeous results, try colors such as seafoam green, terracotta, baby blue or pink, or navy blue.

2. Consider Painting a Pattern on Your Ceiling

Yes, it’s super-easy to consider your ceiling an unimportant part of the paint job, but these days, a colorful pattern painted on your ceiling can instantly attract the attention of anyone who enters that room. Make sure at least some of the colors tie in with the colors on the walls and floors so that the ceiling will complement the rest of the room.

3. Use Limewash Instead of Paint

Limewash is a mixture of crushed and liquified limestone that is then dyed with natural pigments to get some unique colors. Limewash produces a look that has a texture similar to suede, and it’s a simple product to use yet produces some spectacular results.

4. Paint a Pattern on Your Floor

It’s easy to forget about your floor when having your home painted, but think of it this way: if you paint a gorgeous pattern on your floor—such as diamond shapes or squares—not only will everyone who visits you notice, but it’s a “fun” look as well. If you do this, make sure your walls aren’t too busy or detailed.

5. Put Some Pizzazz On Your Walls

There are numerous ways to make your walls stand out, including bright, colorful walls with murals painted on them. It should always match the rest of the room’s decor, but if you’re an artist, you can easily paint an entire scene on your wall that has at least a few colors matching other parts of the room.

6. Use That Painter’s Tape Creatively

People are used to getting creative with paints of different colors, but if you use your painter’s tape wisely, you can create other shapes and designs that make your walls look spectacular. Use paint colors from the same family, e.g., warm reddish hues, so that it doesn’t clash, and complement the look with matching prints for even better results.

7. Paint Your Wood Paneling

For the most part, paneling went out in the 70s, so if it is still in your home, painting over it will make a huge difference in the room’s overall look. If you use light or warm tones, it really opens up the room and makes it look much bigger. You can also choose paint that gives it a natural look or one that hides the fact that it is made out of wood or faux wood.

8. Use Stripes on Your Wall

Everyone loves stripes, and painting vertical stripes on your wall makes it look bold and daring. You don’t have to use a dark color if you don’t want to; for instance, try green and white, tan and beige, rose pink and light pink, or orchid and white. The walls should also match the furniture and window coverings of the room to provide the most attractive result.

9. Add Some Shine to the Room

Whether you’ve painted the room in light or dark colors, try using a high-gloss lacquer as a final coat. This type of finish gives the entire room a more elegant look and looks like you spent a lot of money on it—even when you didn’t! The room will look inviting and impressive at the same time, and the lacquer costs less than you might think.

10. Pay Attention to the Details

If you’re not an artist but you want something more than solid-colored walls, just add some details to them to get a little extra oomph. Try painting a few lines all around the top of the wall or even further down close to where the cabinetry begins. If the lines aren’t too wide, it looks like hand-painted trim and it’s stunning to say the least.

11. Use the Same Color on the Walls and One Piece of Furniture

For a real “together” look that is easy to paint, choose a piece of furniture—for instance, a couch or a lounge chair—that is the same color as your walls. Not all of the furniture should be this color, but having just one piece the same color as your walls brings the entire room together well.

12. Don’t Be Afraid to Use Bright Colors

In certain rooms, including kids’ bedrooms, using bright colors is a smart decision. Don’t be afraid to use colors such as bright pink, neon green, bright orange, or even red, and if you use more than one bright color on a particular wall, that’s even better.
