Own Each Room

Give it flair!

Easy and affordable ways to organize and creatively use your space. Via Etsy.

For me, when it comes to organizing— I flail and flop like a fish out of water, wondering why I have to try to learn to breathe air when it’s just easier to go back into the water.

My younger sister Jen is the novice but talented interior decorator that can take any space and any budget to organize something into a unique and comfortable environment. She’s adept at this, and I am not. Like in the example above. Here is the link to this idea:

Here is my idea combined with my sisters, be simple, creative, minimalistic and you’ll find a more breathable living space.

When I was little, I tried to find ways to motivate myself to organize my room.

With me, it was my porcelain dolls and glass figures.

What I did in my room to start organizing was take on different sections to toss things I no longer needed or wanted, and either put them in my closet for safekeeping or threw them out. If my dresser top and desk was cluttered, I’d use organizers or clear them off completely. Also, take baby steps and don’t get overwhelmed. Take a break if you need it. Sip some hot tea or coffee. But keep organizing!

I’d put my notebooks, (fills of my stories and poems, school papers, etc.) and all my drawings and other such works in a neat pile (while also throwing away things I no longer needed).

The main purpose of any kind of cleaning is to expel—-to get rid of unnecessary stuff and waste.

So extra clutter, any trash or anything that can distract you from your focus—even if it’s too much art on the walls or too little art, you should find a good balance. According to The Office Oasis, people with an organized desk can stay focused 167% longer than those with an disorganized one. A study* done in 2009 also proved the case that too much clutter can effect your mental health. For mothers whose home environments were disorganized and cluttered, the levels of the stress hormone cortisol were higher than those whose homes were organized. The effect of elevated cortisol levels sustained over time can lead to anxiety and depression.

I always had a thing for Knick Knacks. My favorite thing to do after cleaning anything up, be it my room, a refrigerator, the kitchen floor, the bathroom, etc, would be to add some flair to it.

My room was there, in my opinion, to showcase my favorite things.

My porcelain dolls, for instance, might have a whole space in top of my dresser for a week.

Next, my glass figures.

Then, my Beanie Baby collection would be the star of the show. The key is to rotate and change things out, to let your things breathe, and to give yourself a chance to show off all of your interests—whether it’s photography, art, dolls, film, it can be anything!

Refrigerators are always important to clean out too! The main thing about that is, first in, first out! Get out anything spoiled or old, and put up anything new to the front.

But my favorite part after all the dirty work was to organize all the refrigerator magnets on the front.

And throwing away all the old notes left on it, outdated grocery lists, and giving the outside a fresh look to.

A bathroom also can use flair after cleaning. Lit scented candles, an extra piece of well designed art, and maybe even a new bathroom shower organizer and it’ll look better than brand new!

Sometimes, if you don’t have these things—-just by rearranging your stuff or your furniture and cleaning up behind it can help your mindset and your focus.

Spring cleaning is essential, I agree. It’s important to go through places in your home you don’t usually go to, and clean it out, throw things away, and reorganize for the new year.

But I think baby steps every day to keep things organized and clean is also important. And flair!

Always add something of yourself to a room, to own it! Even the bathroom, living room, and closet!

Here is the reference to the 2009 case, as well as other reasons disorganizion can effect your well-being, and also drastically impact businesses (healthcare especially) financially all from being disorganized.

In this new year, I say for everyone to be well, show off your flair—-and be healthy and organized! It’ll help you feel more empowered and calm, and more focused on this shaky and strange road ahead.
