Building your own dream house is the perfect way to live exactly the way you want. No matter how perfect a pre-built home is, there are always one or two features that you wish could be changed, or a few additions made. When you're building your own home from the ground-up, though, the choice is completely your own. All the extra features that would put the finishing touches on your dream home can be easily included when you are starting with a clean slate.

Planning is key when creating a dream home, and knowing what features you want to add in advance will save you a lot of time and headaches further down the line in changing the plans, redoing construction work, and gaining local authority approval. Below are a few unusual features that you can add to a new home while under construction to really put the personalised finishing touches on your property.

Indoor-Outdoor Pool

A swimming pool is a great addition to any home. It offers the perfect place to relax, entertain, and exercise all right on your doorstep. Swimming pools are regularly added with ease to existing properties, but planning a swimming pool addition during construction affords you a few extra options in terms of design, such as an indoor-outdoor pool. An indoor-outdoor pool offers you the best of both worlds whatever the weather, with an outdoor section to relax in the summer heat and an indoor section as part of the same pool, to retreat to when the weather gets cooler or in the evenings.

Spiral Slide Staircase

A spiral staircase is both functional, space-saving, and look spectacular, but they can be further enhanced with the addition of a slide staircase. The slide generally sits around the outside of the staircase banister and offers a quick and fun way to descend the levels of your home. While it may seem like a silly indulgence, and is especially great if you have kids, it can also be wonderful fun for adults as well.

Cats Entertainment Area

Cats are notoriously hard to entertain, and if left to their own devices will often find entertainment on their own that is detrimental to an undamaged and tidy home. Cat entertainment areas can range from a dedicated space in the corner of a room to various climbable and playful features throughout your home, but whatever option you decide to go for, you can be sure that you furry friends will love the custom-made attention.

Built in Bubble Tea Bar

It's no secret that bubble tea has skyrocketed in demand over recent years. Originally from Taiwan, the trend has caught fire and now a staple in our beverage choices. From the classic pearl milk tea, to now cheese foam topped tea, the choices are endless. Best of all, bubble tea is simple to make at home, from brewing the tea to making the tapioca pearls. Build your own DIY bubble tea bar in your entertainment room, fitted out with the tea station, mini fridge to a topping station, you have the perfect entertainment bar to fulfil your sweet tooth.

Fusion Pool Table

Every home needs a good dining room table, but what if that table could serve multiple purposes in a seamless and stylish fashion? Fusion pool tables have all the benefits of a regular dining room table, but when dinner is finished and you're in the mood for some fun and games, the top can be removed to reveal a full-sized pool table. If pool isn't your game of choice, other options are available like a board game or poker table in the hidden section.

Build a Man Cave

Contrary to what the name may suggest, man caves aren't only for the men of the household, and will be a guaranteed hit with the whole family. Each man cave is unique, but in general, they are a room dedicated to fun and entertainment with comfy seating, home entertainment and gaming systems, soundproofing, and often their own bar or drinks/snacks fridge. Just be careful to set a schedule to prevent fights over who gets to spend the most time here!

Wall Aquarium

Aquariums serve as a dual-purpose addition to your home. Fish make for excellent pets, requiring very little maintenance in comparison to cats, dogs, or other animals. But that isn't the only benefit: aquariums are also a pleasure to sit and watch—a living piece of art. Wall sized aquariums fit seamlessly into your home and give the fish plenty of space to swim around and enjoy themselves.

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating is a great way to make your whole house feel warm and cozy, in an energy-efficient way. They can be complex and expensive to fit into a property after construction, though, as they necessitate lifting all the flooring. That makes them an ideal choice to consider when in the planning and construction stage of your new home.

Backyard Office

If you work from home, which many of us have had to get used to, you will need a dedicated space in your house to work in. A backyard office is an ideal way to gain the privacy and space you need to work, but without occupying a room in your house and making you feel like you never get away from the office.

Not all of these home additions will be to everybody's taste, but the important part is to think outside the box when you are in the process of planning and constructing your new home. Changes made after construction is complete can be much more expensive, and you will often find yourself constrained by the existing design.

Planning these additions in advance can save a lot of time and money, but will also grant you a much greater degree of flexibility in the design, placement, and style. If you are planning big additions, such as a swimming pool or "man" cave, then be sure to get in touch with the specialist companies early in the process so they can work alongside your architect to better incorporate the solutions into the final design.
