Life in Plastic Is NOT Fantastic

5 Things You Can Do Today That the Planet Will Thank You Tomorrow

Maya Bay (Thailand) - September 2017

We all are aware of the big problem we have: plastic pollution. There are many articles, books, campaigns about plastic consumption, but very few do something. It seems like people were hearing but not listening. But who does, right? Even though there is so much information around, we don't face this issues on a daily basis (or at least that’s what we like to think).

I get it. How can we make an impact, right? In a way, I used to think like that as well. It wasn’t until 2017 while I was backpacking around Southeast Asia that it hit me. Being in so many beautiful beaches that I had been dreaming of for years and not being able to enjoy them was just illogical. How can the UNESCO heritage: Halong Bay be full of trash? To the point that the guides ask you to NOT swim in those crystal waters. How can Maya Bay, in Thailand, famously known for being the scene of the movie The Beach, be full of plastic bags, straws, plastic wraps? It was so disgusting and sad that I decided to pick up the trash. We don't understand the damage we are creating. Again: We don’t see, right? Why would we do something?

Halong Bay (Vietnam) - September 2017

Brief summary: The ocean cleans the CO2 of the planet, and regulates the climate and the weather. All things needed to survive.

I don’t like to talk about problems unless we’re going to talk or find solutions. This time is not going to be any different. There are easy solutions that you can implement from your home that will have a significant impact.

1. Straws and Disposable Utensils

First of all, who needs straws? Most of the people that use those are not 3 years old anymore (right?). I’m sure they can (“safely”) drink straight from the cup. Since there is no need for straws anymore, we can say a big BYE to the leads as well. Also, I’m sure we all have knives and forks at home. Take them to work! When you go to a restaurant that offers disposable utensils, ask them if they have silverware.

2. Reusable Grocery Bags

You can get them for $0.99 in grocery stores. I always keep one with me in case I need a last min grocery visit (you never know when you’re going to crave chocolate and wine). Also, when you get onions, tomatoes, and fruits, you don’t need to wrap them in the “recycled plastic bags.” Yes, those green ones that have a different texture that is supposed to be “better” than plastic. They are ALL plastic. Just place them in your grocery bag.

3. Water Bottles

It’s shown that a tap filter saves you more money than buying water bottles. There are also springs around the U.S where you can get water for free! (That's how I get my water.) Here is the link.

4. Containers

Some grocery stores let you bring your jars. No need for plastic at all (Woohoo)!

5. Learn about recycling!

Research different ways to recycle and how to recycle. Learn not only to take care of the environment but for your pocket as well. There are more ways to reuse all those plastic bottles and plastic bags you’re about to throw away. Pinterest has excellent and infinite ideas!
