There are many great fighters out there, each with their unique style. For example Bruce Lee was famous for the Jeet Kune Do style, Muhammad Ali is famous for his dancing moves in the ring and Mike Tyson is famous for his devastation knock out punches. There are lots and lots of other famous fighters and martial artists out there but each of them has started off with learning the basics.

The world famous Michael Jordan practiced the basics of his sport over and over again and when it came to those last few dying seconds in a playoff final he would refer back to the very basics to make sure that the point counted.

A lot of people see martial arts in the media and they see the show boating and the flying through the air moves and are very impressed by it. Although it is good to aim for what they see, they however miss or forget the basics.

What are the basics?

What was your first day like in a boxing gym or martial arts dojo? You probably saw the experienced athletes performing techniques that you thought would be a long shot away for you. Your coach probably took you through the basics in apparel and then how to position your hands and feet, you might have been shown how to warm up, and then shown how to throw the most basic punches, possibly a jab and some other punches and kicks. You were also taught how to breathe when carrying out these manoeuvres.

Needless to say, the basics are very important whatever your sport. You might have a constant injury that is having an impact on your performance. Going back to the very basics of warming up correctly, stretching correctly, warming down correctly and even your food, fluid and supplement intake can make masses of difference when going through the mechanics of things.

Things to Avoid

There are lots of "fake" teachers out there that promise that you'll be able to render 12 strong attackers immobile after learning this special move or reading a book that costs hundreds of pounds etc.

There is no way round it; to become proficient at your sport will take dedication and this is especially so if you aim to be the best.

Notice that martial arts mentioned here is referred to as sport. All martial arts should be used for learning and sporting purposes only. There are so many times I have explained to students that using your skills on the street is not the way to deal with situations. Of course there might times when you are force to defend your life and your martial art would come in handy, but getting into fights on the street especially with someone that has no martial arts training is morally wrong. .

Recommendations

If you are having any problems with injuries, you might want to try something new or you just feel that you are not reaching your full potential, a good recommendation would be to speak to your coach, sensei, master or sifu with your queries. Seek knowledge by learning from others and reading. Also consult your doctor. The more martial arts become more and more popular doctors are becoming more acquainted with how to work with the body with regard to contact sports and training.

Seek out diet and nutrition experts that can help you maximize you potential even if that is by making a few tweaks with the way you eat and drink.
