Layering rugs

To layer or not to layer... That is the question!?

Layer or not to layer, that is the question...

I have many different opinions on rugs and the use of layering rugs… I keep seeing layered rugs everywhere at the moment and so I decided I might need to write a blog about it… My blogs are dictated to by things I see, things I like and dislike and current trends. My initial thought on layering rugs was, “is that really necessary?!” However after playing with the idea I can now see the benefits. Continue reading for hints and tips if the idea doesn’t completely disgust you.

“is that really necessary?!”

not something I will ever say to a client...

This idea isn’t the most minimal of looks, it might not be the right look for you if your home is inspired by Scandinavian, clean straight lines. For most spaces layering rugs can help to define and outline areas, it can work really well in open plan living by separating certain areas for particular activities. Rugs can add a sense of cosyness, by incorporating textures and a feeling of comfort.

Rugs tend to be designed to be used alone, usually with bold patterns or colours to help cover / complement plain or non descript flooring. They can be a cheap alternative to replacing old carpets or warn unwanted floor boards. Together, collectively a combination of rugs that aren’t usually placed together can be an impactful design choice showing ones personal taste and provide a bit of fun.

One thing you will know about my design style if you have seen my work before, or read any of my blogs, is that I like to break the rules. In fact, my party line when it comes to interior design is: “There are no rules”. Whilst I know this is not true, the basis of design is built upon rules and guidelines, I like to use this phrase to spark inspiration and unique designs. Nothing ever improves if it always stays the same.

The title of this blog ‘Layering rugs’ is the broken rule in this situation, now I am going to outline some tips to rug layering that whilst they are not rules, they will help guide you when being the brave rulebreaker that you have now become!!

Define the space: firstly choose a space and have intention. You are most likely either reading this because you have searched for ‘ideas when using rugs’ or you have been caught by the catchy title and are now thinking of where you could use this technique. Have an area in mind and a purpose, design should have an intention. Think about why you want to try this out, like I mentioned earlier on you might be wanting to define an area, in which case make sure the pattern or the colour is bold or contrasting from the floor in which you want to place it on. If the intention is for it to stand out then make sure it does.

If you want to add comfort or a grounding to the space your feet land as you wake up in the morning, make sure you use something with a bit of texture e.g. a fur or a knit.

As always with design, knowing the why is always the best place to start when figuring out the how.

Ensure the rugs contrast: you want the rugs to stand out next to each other, the different they are the better!! Either use different colours, textures or patterns to create interest.

Happy playing with layering, please comment if you have any questions!!
