We’ve just been through a long cold winter trying to get warm, and now we are in for a long hot, humid summer and it’s going to be a challenge keeping the house cool and comfortable during the summer months. We have put together some valuable tips and advice on doing just that and effective ways of enabling your heat pump or air conditioner to operate more effectively and most importantly, more efficiently.

You may be concerned about your potential energy bill over the summer period - so here are helpful ideas on helping you to economise on your energy use and get the best from your air conditioning or heat pump system.

1. Shut your windows and doors!

You may have some some cooler air temperatures at night and if so keep your windows open and allow the cool air to circulate through your home overnight.

In the morning close your windows and doors and trap the cooler air inside before the outside temperatures soar again.

2. Close your blinds and curtains during the day

This technique will trap the cool air inside your home in the same way as shutting your doors and windows. If you do this you won’t need to have the air conditioning cranked up high all day every day; you’ll only need it on intermittently as this will help keep cooler air in your home for a longer period.

This will help you reduce your energy cost and your air conditioner or heat pump will also run with greater efficiency.

3. Swap your incandescent lights for more energy-efficient ones

This may be an eye-opener but not many people realise that 90% of the energy used by incandescent lighting is wasted as heat. If you have a home full of incandescent lightbulbs they will be helping to make your home warmer so for a minimal cost swap these for the much better energy-saving bulbs - it will save you money in the long run.

4. Cook outside rather than inside

Your oven and other kitchen appliances are a source of heat that you don’t need in your cool home! Cooking outside on a barbecue or even a portable stove is a great way to keep your home cooler - and it’s great fun for all the family too.

5. Get your heat pump or air conditioner serviced

A heat pump or air conditioner that is not maintained or serviced properly will be more expensive to run. Check out some easy cleaning tips online or book a cleaning service with a professional for peace of mind.

Regular maintenance will keep your system running more efficiently, not only saving you money but helping to save the planet as well!

The best tip cool tip of all? Install a split air conditioning system!

Most heat pumps are dual-purpose and provide not only cool air in summer but warm air in the cold winter season. It makes for good economic sense to have this one economical appliance that fulfils both needs.

Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps or split air conditioners are very effective at circulating cool air around your home or wherever you need it. They provide the perfect way to condition your home either with cold air in summer or warm air in winter without breaking the bank!

A good professional heat pump supplier will give you good advice on the type of system suited for your situation i.e. your style of home, lifestyle and budget. They’ll be able to answer all your questions about air conditioning and heating and put you on the right track. It’s well worth checking out!
