Itsy Bitsy Spider

“Itsy Bitsy Spider” is a modern nursery rhyme that is very popular among parents of babies and young toddlers. After doing a search on the Internet, I could not find the origin of this song. It appears to be ‘unknown’.

The nursery rhyme was first published in 1920, more as a song for adults in “Camp and Camino in Lower California” with the words “blooming, bloody” instead of “itsy bitsy”. Me being of UK heritage, these lyrics sound like they came from a Brit rather than a Yank!

The actual version of “Itsy Bitsy Spider” was later printed in 1947 by the California Folklore Society in the Western Folklore collection. It appears as a nursery rhyme in 1948 in the American Folk Songs for Children a collection by Mike and Peggy Seeger. In 1955 it appears in Maxwell Slutz Stewart’s book “The Growing Family: A Guide for Parents”.

ITSY BITSY SPIDER FINGER PLAY

“Itsy Bitsy Spider”, more often recited than sung, is a finger-play rhyme for children. It tells the adventures of a spider, named Itsy Bitsy (or Incy Wincy – more popular in United Kingdom). He is going up and down, and up again a water spout, as the weather is changing. The child has to mimic the finger movements of the adult while singing the song.

Spiders will typically move indoors in the fall when the weather begins to turn cold so they can store their eggs, find food and live in relative comfort freely using your heat without even offering to help pay for it!
