You're sitting down reading a book in the living room, and suddenly you can sniff that something's not right. As soon as you get up, you investigate if your cat or dog has spread the urine somewhere, but everything seems clean.

You walk outside your home to see if the odour is coming from outside, but it's not- it's coming from the inside!

It's from your rugs!! You probably fear throwing away your rugs- because carpets are precious and very expensive.

Removing certain odours from certain rugs can be difficult, and some drugs are extremely sensitive and cannot handle harsh chemicals, so what do you do?

I'm happy to say that it's not a hopeless situation, as there are several things you can do to remove the odour from your carpets.

We'll show you some simple but effective ways to ensure that your rugs smell great.

Let's find out

Vinegar And Baking Soda Is Match Made In Heaven

If mildew or food odour is the issue with your rug, you can follow the following method to clean your rugs.

  • Vacuum
  • Vinegar
  • Dustpan
  • Broom

After you've gathered the ingredients, proceed to the next step.

Strew baking soda across the rug

Work the baking soda into the inner layer of the fibres with a broom.

Allow it to remain undisturbed for the night; cover the rug with a blanket or keep it out of reach if you have pets.

To remove the excess baking soda, sweep the rug the next morning and vacuum

Allow for 30 minutes to rest after spraying vinegar.

Completely dry it out.

Rep until the odour has vanished completely.

If you want to get rid of strong odours, repeat the process over three times and leave the baking soda in the rug for a longer time than overnight.

You can even clean urine spots with this baking soda and vinegar method, which is great because all pet owners are aware of pet threats to their rugs and carpets- they don't get along!

Sunlight Shuns Bacteria

There is no better way to get rid of bacterial odour in your rug than by exposing it to sunlight.

If you have a wool rug, for example, you won't use the vinegar and baking soda method, so the best option is to use the sun. The sun shuns and kills the microorganisms that cause the odour by disrupting fungus and bacteria.

On a bright sunny day, you'll want to hang your rug and keep flipping it every 3-4 hours so it can get the sun's advantage from all corners.

Fresh Air For The Win

If your home has poor ventilation, then it is a given that your rugs or rooms will start smelling unusual.

The best way is to open up doors and windows, and this can air out your home. Do it and trust us, even a simple thing can make a vast difference.

Tea Tree Oil Is Great

Essential oils are amazing to treat awful odours. However, there is a certain process you need to follow.

  • You need one cup of water
  • 15 drops of tea tree oil
  • Borax
  • spray bottle

For a great DIY carpet cleaning formula, all that you need is a spray bottle filled with water and tea tree oil–create the mixture by mixing the two.

Shake the bottle well, then take it out into your carpeted area to drench it using either a spray or pouring method.

Next, sprinkle some borax powder on the moistened area and leave this for at least eight hours to allow the ingredients to soak in before vacuuming up.

Conclusion

So there you have it, readers, some simple ways in which nature and a few household items such as vinegar and baking soda can assist you.

If you require a more thorough cleaning, please seek the help of a professional, as cleaning rugs is more difficult when the damage is greater.
