IQ vs. EQ. Who wins, and why the roles changed?
IQ used to have the upper hand, but EQ has the endurance power.
Are people with high EQ more selective?
Yes.
I think that people with high EQ tend to be more selective, because:
they read others easily
are better judges of character
can recognize false motives
can see truth behind ‘’good sounding’’ intentions
aren’t easily fooled
prefer to spent time with valuable people
don’t get involved in others’ drama
dislike arrogance
are always 2 steps ahead of others
Those people value themselves and their time, and use it to the max.
You won’t find them among complainers, deceivers, liars, time wasters, or pity-seekers.
IQ will always be the factor against which the world will divide all of us. And until about 20 years ago, that was the long end of the stick that decided some of the most important professional decisions. In many areas, it still is, and will remain so for decades to come. Maybe for centuries, even.
But with the emergence and quickly gaining speed, the EQ is now gaining in the professional circles, and in interpersonal interactions as well.
EQ doesn't divide humanity in the same way IQ does, but it is gaining precedence on its own. Silently. Slowly but surely. Consistently.
IQ used to exist by itself. Strong. Because it was revered for its own attributes.
But the world is always changing, and with it things that used to be solid, are now changing, too. Decades-long standards are undergoing transformations. IQ in collaboration with EQ becomes the new ''strong team''. Gradually a team unlikely to have formed 20 years ago, became a reality in today's world.
After all, what it comes down to, it is always person to person who will make the final decision, so the person needs to be a master of leading, directing, and understanding others. Hence the 5 pillars of those interpersonal interactions that navigate those decisions:
Self-Awareness: Deciphering your own and others emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and how the atmosphere in the room affects the people in a few feet radius from you.
Self-Regulation: The way you prioritize your cool to control or avoid impulsive reactions , speech and behaviors that could potentially bring the ceiling down.
Motivation: Your ability to see beyond the immediate rewards, and recognizing the value of long-term dedication in the pursuit of your goals.
Empathy: Your willingness to see the world through another person's eyes, to understand what shapes their perspective on life and their reactions that may not align with your own reactions.
Social Skills: Your ability to manage your life in a group, professional or personal, without conflicts, creating a common ground instead of culture of division and fault-finding. Your ability to get along with others.
While IQ is a straight forward road, EQ is much more complex, nuanced with skills that can't be necessarily learned from books, but rather developed by becoming flexible with constant practice. The better you get at it, the more success you'll attain in your professional and personal life. As long as you'll interact with others, face to face or screen to screen, developing excellent EQ skills in inevitable if success in those areas is important to you.
With constantly changing world, continuous improvement is needed, and in this era, that improvement means developing a strong EQ. In the previous generations, one job in a lifetime with a gold watch reward was the goal, nowadays this reality and expectation changed by 360*, and making an impact on the world slowly emerges as the priority for the newer Generations. With an EQ-rich environment, those and future generation are more likely to envision their place there, offering high, purpose driven productivity.
Cultivating Emotional Intelligence is now the way to successful professional and personal evolvement.
