I Wrote 100 Articles and Finally Discovered What Actually Makes Money

By PeterPublished 6 months ago • 4 min read

For a long time, I thought I was doing everything right.

I was writing consistently.

I was following advice.

I was putting in the hours.

And yet…

I was making almost no money.

After publishing nearly 100 articles online, my total earnings were embarrassingly low. Some days, I made nothing. Other days, maybe a few dollars.

It didn’t make sense.

I wasn’t lazy. I wasn’t careless.

So why wasn’t it working?

That question stayed with me — until I finally found the answer.

And when I did, everything changed.

The Hard Truth: Effort Doesn’t Equal Income

This was the first lesson I had to accept:

Just because you work hard doesn’t mean you’ll make money.

It sounds obvious. But most creators don’t truly understand it.

I used to believe that if I wrote enough, something would eventually “click.”

So I kept going.

10 articles.

30 articles.

50 articles.

Still nothing.

At around article #70, I started to feel frustrated.

At #100, I felt something worse:

👉 Doubt.

Not just about the process — but about myself.

What I Was Doing Wrong (And Why Most People Fail Too)

Looking back, I can clearly see my mistakes.

And chances are, if you’re not making money online yet, you might be making the same ones.

1. I Wrote What I Wanted — Not What People Needed

Most of my early articles were based on:

• Personal thoughts

• Random inspiration

• Things I found interesting

But here’s the problem:

👉 Interest doesn’t equal demand.

People don’t pay for what you want to say.

They pay for what helps them.

2. I Ignored Proven Topics

I thought originality was everything.

So I avoided writing about topics like:

• Making money

• Productivity

• Side hustles

Because I felt they were “too common.”

Big mistake.

Those topics are common for a reason:

👉 They make money.

3. I Had No System

Every article was a new experiment.

Different style.

Different tone.

Different structure.

There was no consistency.

No repeatable process.

👉 I was guessing every time I sat down to write.

4. I Focused on Writing — Not Results

This one is subtle but critical.

I measured success by:

• Number of articles

• Words written

• Time spent

But not by:

• Earnings

• Engagement

• Conversion

👉 I was productive, but not effective.

The Turning Point

Everything changed when I stopped asking:

“How can I write better?”

And started asking:

“What kind of writing actually makes money?”

That shift changed everything.

I began studying:

• Top-performing articles on Medium

• Viral content on YouTube

• Popular blog posts on Google

And I noticed something interesting.

The same types of content kept appearing over and over again.

What Actually Makes Money (Based on 100 Articles)

After analyzing my own work and others’, I found clear patterns.

Here’s what consistently worked:

1. Practical Content Beats Creative Content

Stories are good.

But stories alone don’t sell.

What works is:

👉 Stories + Practical Value

For example:

Instead of writing:

“I struggled with motivation…”

I wrote:

“How I overcame procrastination using a simple 3-step system”

Same story.

Different outcome.

One is relatable.

The other is useful.

👉 Useful content gets paid.

2. Specific Numbers Increase Clicks

This one changed everything.

Compare:

• “How to Make Money Online”

vs

• “How I Made $500 in 30 Days Online”

Which one would you click?

Exactly.

Numbers create:

• Curiosity

• Credibility

• Clarity

After I started using numbers in my titles, my clicks increased noticeably.

3. Clear Structure Keeps People Reading

Before, my articles were… messy.

Long paragraphs.

No flow.

No clear takeaway.

Then I started using:

• Short paragraphs

• Subheadings

• Step-by-step sections

And something surprising happened:

👉 People stayed longer.

And on platforms like Medium,

read time = money.

4. Repetition Is Not the Enemy

I used to think:

“I already wrote about this topic.”

So I avoided repeating it.

But the truth is:

👉 You should repeat winning ideas — from different angles.

That’s how you build:

• Authority

• Visibility

• Income

5. Emotion + Clarity = Results

The best-performing articles all had two things:

• Emotional hook (struggle, frustration, hope)

• Clear solution (steps, system, method)

Too much emotion → feels vague

Too much logic → feels boring

👉 The balance is where the money is.

What Happened After I Changed My Approach

Once I applied these principles, things started to shift.

Not instantly — but steadily.

• More views

• More reads

• More engagement

And finally…

👉 More income.

My articles started earning consistently.

Not huge amounts at first.

But enough to prove something important:

👉 This works.

The System I Use Now

After 100 articles, I no longer guess.

I follow a simple system.

Step 1: Choose a Proven Topic

I focus on topics like:

• Making money

• Productivity

• Self-improvement

• Digital skills

Step 2: Add a Personal Angle

I don’t just explain.

I show:

• What I tried

• What failed

• What worked

Step 3: Use Clear Structure

Every article includes:

• Hook (first 3–5 lines)

• Problem

• Turning point

• Steps

• Conclusion

Step 4: Optimize for Results

I pay attention to:

• Title performance

• Read time

• Engagement

And I improve based on that.

Step 5: Stay Consistent

Not perfect.

Not viral.

Just consistent.

The Biggest Lesson

If I could go back to my first article, I would tell myself this:

Don’t just write more.

Write what works.

Because writing 100 articles didn’t make me money.

👉 Understanding what works did.

If You’re Still Struggling…

Let me say this clearly:

You’re not failing.

You’re just missing a system.

Once you find it, everything changes.

Final Thought

Most people quit before they figure it out.

I almost did too.

But the difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is simple:

👉 They stay long enough to learn what works.

If you’re willing to do that…

Then your first $500 —

your first $1,000 —

It’s not a matter of if.

It’s just a matter of when.

Keep going.

You’re closer than you think.
