Health benefits of drinking mushroom coffee

Adaptogenic mushroom coffee has been making headlines for its health-promoting properties. For many, a cup of coffee is a crucial part of starting the day. I'm one of those coffee-lovers, but my husband and I have decided to take a step towards a healthier, less caffeine-dependent lifestyle.

In search of a coffee alternative, my husband brought home a surprise: A can of MUD\WTR. This unique drink blends together masala chai, cacao, turmeric, cinnamon, Himalayan sea salt, and four kinds of mushrooms - lion's mane, cordyceps, chaga, and reishi.

Health benefits of drinking mushroom coffee

The rise of functional mushrooms in wellness has sparked a trend of incorporating them into food and drinks. But do they really live up to their touted health benefits like boosting the immune system and fighting cancer?

According to nutritionist Brierley Horton, MS, RD, while mushrooms do contain disease-fighting antioxidants, there's limited published research to support their efficacy in a hot drink form. Nonetheless, she acknowledges that they are harmless.

MUD\WTR's creator, Shane Heath, claims various health benefits beyond just antioxidants. The website mentions that each ingredient, including masala chai, cacao, turmeric, cinnamon, Himalayan sea salt, and four types of mushrooms, was selected for a specific purpose and offers advantages such as increased alertness, stamina, focus, mental performance, and a wealth of phytonutrients.

Testimonials from satisfied customers, who rave about the taste and improvement in their well-being, can also be found on the site. These factors prompted the author to give the drink a try

How to make MUD\WTR mushroom coffee

With our tin of powder, MUD\WTR mailed us a list of suggested preparations. I started with the MUD MYLK, stirring one tablespoon of the powder into three tablespoons of hot water, and then adding to a cup of steamed oat milk with a tablespoon of coconut oil and a teaspoon of honey. My husband drank his black — just a tablespoon of powder in eight ounces of water.

MUD\WTR drink flavor review

The first sip of MUD/WTR transported me to exotic lands with its rich and layered flavors. The cacao, cinnamon, and turmeric blended seamlessly with the masala chai to create a taste reminiscent of a latte, but with a unique twist. In comparison, my husband's plain cup was a more robust and textured experience with a spicy, full-bodied flavor, distinct from the bitterness of coffee. Although there were some gritty bits left at the bottom of my cup, they would be easily filtered out by straining the liquid.

Is mushroom coffee a replacement for the real thing?

The MUD\WTR drink offers a bold flavor like coffee, with a lower dose of caffeine (14mg compared to coffee's 95mg average) and no jitters. Enjoying the benefits of increased alertness without the shakiness or sleep disruptions made this drink a winner for me. However, its preparation requires a bit more time and effort, as well as an extra cost for additional ingredients like oat milk and honey. But for me, the increase in milk production (by 100%) while breastfeeding made the time and financial investment worth it. If you're seeking just a quick caffeine boost, this drink may not be for you. But if you're looking for a unique, healthier alternative to traditional coffee, give MUD\WTR a try.
