Your bedroom is your sanctuary. It’s where you to go retreat from a stressful day. And it’s quite possibly the most special room in your house, so it would make sense to surround yourself by colors, fabrics, and decor that make you feel calm, cozy, and comforted.

If your bedroom is in need of a pick-me-up, look no further. Here are some interior design tips and tricks to help spruce up your bedroom’s interior design.

Use mirrors to create more light.

This trick is great for those with a small room. Strategically placed mirrors can reflect light around the room making the area look bigger and brighter. The easiest way to do this is to place mirrors of different shapes and sizes across from each other, making the light bounce all over the room. And don’t forget, a mirror doesn’t have to hang on the wall, it can be propped up, hung from the ceiling, or included in your headboard.

Push your bed into a corner.

When your bed is in the center of your room, it’s easy for it to feel too large and almost make the room feel stuffy. Pushing your bed into a corner will not only create a sleep space that seems cozier, but it will also save room.

Transform your pictures.

Gone are the days of photos tacked to the walls, and in are the photo canvas prints. Just take a photo and print it on any size canvas you choose. (This will give the photo a textured look.) Canvas prints are a great way to highlight a few special pictures and show off your memories without making the wall look clustered. You can pick a variety of different sizes, depending on the specific look you are going for.

Bring the outdoors in.

Keep a breath of fresh air with you at all times by bringing a few potted plants into your space. Large ferns are great to keep in the corners, spider plants are wonderful when hung from the ceilings, and succulents look adorable on a windowsill. As an added bonus, the plants will create healthier air and bring in a nice fragrance to your bedroom.

Layer your bedding.

The key to a great bed is to layer it with different materials and fabrics. Plus, your body temperature is more likely to fluctuate at nighttime, so you’ll want to be prepared! Think something along the lines of silk sheets, a satin comforter, fuzzy blankets, and nubby throws. You can even layer fabric around your bedposts and bed frame if you are feeling creative!

Stick to neutrals.

A bright color palette is better suited in the kitchen or family room, not your tranquil bedroom. Consider decorating your bedroom in neutral and/or pastel colors, as this will instantly create a sense of calm when you walk into it after a stressful day or when you wake up. Some colors to look into include pale blue, gray, cream, lavender, or pastel green. If you do want a pop of color, leave it to your curtains, throw blanket, or rug. (But not all three at once!)

Play with light.

You may work on your laptop in bed, watch television, or read before you go to sleep. All of these different activities require different lighting, so feel free to invest in multiple different kinds all over the room. Sconces, bedside lamps, tall pillar lights, and overhead spotlights can be wonderful, versatile additions and will work for you no matter what kinds of light you need, when.

With these interior design tricks in mind, you’ll be on your way to having the bedrooms of your dreams in no time at all!
