After spending a large amount of time at home over the last year, most of us are pretty fed up with the inside of our homes. So now is a great time to do your annual clear-out, make some changes, and get your home ready for the summer. Here are some tips for making 2021 the best spring clean of your life.

Spring cleaning tips

If you’re dreading the idea of cleaning your home from top to bottom in the next few weeks, these are some ways that you can make it a bit easier to tackle:

  • Write a list of everything you need to clean, clear out, or organize, and set yourself a deadline.
  • Don’t force yourself to tackle everything in one day, break it up by room or different tasks.
  • Start from the top and work your way down as you go so that the dirt and dust don’t fall onto areas that you’ve already cleaned.
  • When you’re tackling a whole room work your way around from right to left so that you don’t miss anything.

Checklist for spring cleaning

To make 2021 the best spring clean of your life you need to make sure that you remember all the messy corners and spots you’ve neglected to clean throughout the rest of the year.

Clean your big appliances

Take the time to properly clean the big appliances you use every day such as the dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, oven, and fridge freezer. Wipe them down on the outside and use specialized cleaning products to give the insides a thorough clean.

Regularly cleaning your appliances is important for maintaining them so they’ll last for longer and also helps improve how they work. If you’ve got a tendency to hoard things in your fridge, have a thorough clear-out and get rid of anything that’s out of date, has been open for a long time, or you’re never going to finish off.

Clear out your wardrobe

Spring is the perfect time for a big clear out of all the clothes that you don’t wear or have seen better days. Try to be strict with yourself — anything that you haven’t worn in the last month can be cleared out unless you can really justify why you should keep it.

Once you’ve cleared out the clothes you don’t need, you can organize what’s left by color or occasion so it’s easy to find what you want to wear. You could also use vacuum storage bags to save space storing your winter jumpers and coats.

Refresh the walls

If you don’t take care of your walls they can start to look scruffy and worn out pretty quickly. For painted walls you can use a cloth dipped in water and mild washing up liquid to remove marks and scuffs. Paint over stains that are hard to remove to keep the walls looking fresh.

Alternatively, consider updating your home with some wallpaper to cover up tired walls. You can make a statement with wallpaper and create a feature wall that brightens up the room. Walls are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning, but giving them a spring refresh or update will make a huge difference to your home.

Clean the floors

Now is the time to go all out and tackle all the dirt, stains, and marks that have appeared on your floors. Sweep or mop hard floors and use specialized cleaning products to repair any marks. Take up area rugs and hallways runners and give them a wash. You can hire a carpet cleaner to do it yourself or pay someone to clean them professionally.

Organize your kitchen cupboards

If your kitchen cupboards have gotten messy and disorganized then make sure to do a thorough sort through them as part of your spring cleaning. Move everything out of the cupboards and decide what you need to keep and what you can clear out. Then organize them with storage containers, baskets, and dividers so that everything has a place.

Wash your bedding

It’s important to clean all of your bedding regularly — that includes the comforter, pillows, and the mattress. Many comforters can be washed in a normal washing machine, but check the labels. You should also turn over your mattress if you don’t already, to prolong its life.

Clean the tiles

Deep clean the tiles in your bathroom, kitchen, and anywhere else in your home. You can use baking soda mixed with water and a sponge to wipe down the tiles and grouting. This is a good time to tackle any mold on your grouting as well, using bleach or white vinegar.

By cleaning, clearing out, and organizing all of these things you’ll be able to make 2021 the best spring clean of your life and get your home ready for summer.
