Before Installation: Preparing the Window

Before we talk about how to install an aircon, check the window first if it is in good condition. After installation, you may not open such a window for several months until you need to remove the aircon, so you should wash its glass now inside and out. Also, clear the space around your window for you to have enough working space without any tripping hazards. Make sure that your window opening is free from obstructions like storm window screens or frames that might block the overhanging portion of the aircon on the outside.

How to Install Your Aircon?

Follow the manufacturer’s directions to prepare your air conditioning unit for installation. This may involve adding brackets. Double-check the dimensions of the air conditioner and then compare them to your window opening. Below is a series of steps on AC installation.

Step 1

Get a helper to position the air conditioner. Center and insert your aircon in the window, with the lower window sash as far up as it can go. Keep the aircon balanced while sliding the flange on the case’s bottom against the outer edge of your windowsill. Drag the bottom window sash lower until it rests directly on the aircon and firmly against the upper flange.

Note: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on air conditioning installation to make sure that it enables condensation to properly drain.

Step 2

After you balance the aircon on the windowsill, you will see why the top sash needs to remain in a fixed position and hold your aircon in place. Insert two screws or more through the top flange on the AC case into your window sash so that the sash will not be raised accidentally. You have to drill pilot holes first to prevent the screws from splitting the wood. Use a drill bit that is a bit smaller in diameter than the core of the screw. Now wrap the bit with masking tape to limit the depth of drilling to the screw length.

Either cut spacers out of 2” x 2” stock and then wedge them in between the top of the window frame and the lower sash or attach L-shaped clips connecting the lower sash frame to the upper sash frame.

Note: Not all windows at home enable you to use these L-shaped clips for holding the lower sash in place. In the case of vinyl windows, you can replace these clips with strips of wood that are sufficiently long to wedge tightly between the window sash and the top of your window frame. You can cut these strips from wooden sticks used for stirring paints.

Step 3

To prevent hot air, moisture, and bugs from entering your room, drag the side curtains from the edges of your window frame. Follow the manufacturer’s directions on how to screw or clip the curtains securely. Although expanding these curtains will help in sealing your room, they should not be considered as an alternative to insulation. Therefore, cut white foam insulation board into sizes that will tightly fit around the opening on the outside, if the window is highly exposed to the sun. You may instead purchase accordion-type insulating panels then cut them to snugly fit your opening.

Step 4

You need to fill the gap between the window on the top sash and the frame of the bottom sash. If your air conditioning unit has a foam seal, cut it to slip in place. You can buy a foam filler separately if it disappeared when the aircon was in storage during the winter.

Now that you are done installing your window-type air conditioner, plug it in. You can use an AC extension cord if necessary. Wait until your newly air-conditioned bedroom cools off.

Best Location for Window-Type Aircon

Apart from learning about window AC installation, you should also learn where to install it at home since you will not be moving it on a daily basis.

• Make sure that an electrical outlet is available close enough to the selected window that can be reached by the unit cord. Avoid using an extension cord or plug adapter on your aircon.

• Make sure that your aircon will be free from obstruction on the inside and out. The outside of your unit should be able to diffuse heat, so avoid covering it up to keep it working at its intended performance.

• Consider installing the aircon in a bedroom window. Our sleeping area is a highly prioritized space to cool because sleeping in a hot room can be extremely uncomfortable.

• If you are living in a two-story house, you may want to place the aircon in a window on the second floor. Cooler air travels downward, so the first floor requires less cooling than the second floor.

Factors to Consider on Window Air Conditioner Installation

Types of Aircon

The first factor to consider for your AC installation project is the kind of aircon. A high-powered, commercial air conditioner will have a higher installation cost than a low-powered type of unit for home use.

Energy Consumption

Air conditioners are known for their high energy consumption. It can be costly but selecting the right unit for the size of your room, as well as one with an energy-efficient feature, can offer long-term significant savings.

Size and Location

The size and location of an aircon will affect its operating cost. Warmer places of your home, like those directly facing the afternoon sun, require more power and cost for cooling the area.
