How to Discover Your Style?

Let's find out!

You'll understand the nostalgia around "Y2K" fashion, the glitter bomb pre-teen boutique if you grew up as a fashion-obsessed girl in the '00s. Justice, as well as a few well-known boy bands. American Girl, Seventeen, and (later, when I was a little older) Teen Vogue were among my favorites. I'd have my mother take me to my local library, where I'd skip the fiction department and go right to the magazine area. I would pore over the pages of apparel, analyze celebrity ensembles, and take the style tests with great care. Please tell me I wasn't the only one who was influenced by the answers of those "What Type of Style Suits You Best" questionnaires, and that I wasn't the only one who believed you could only be Classic, Bohemian, Rocker Chick, or Floral.

With such findings, a lot of girls would be buying ballerina flats, button-downs, fringe vests, and bell-bottoms as if they were the only thing they could wear. Also, they wore kohl eyeliner, flowery "mumus," and rose perfume as if their life depended on it since Seventeen magazine told them that was the outcome of their survey.

You came to this page because you want to learn how to discover your style. Those tests are how not to identify your style, so let's move on to what will help you find your ideal wardrobe now that we've proved that categorizing style into four categories is ludicrous. I have three questions for you that will assist you in determining your style. Let's get this party started!

What do you have in your possession?

Open your closet and write down what you observe in the Notes app on your phone. Which colors stick out the most? What are the patterns? Do you have a lot of linen or maxi dresses in your closet? What is your most prized possession? Which object did you stow away in the back? What is your go-to pair of shoes? Do you have a lot of tank tops that you don't like? Do you like to wear button-downs as a layering piece? What types of coats do you frequently purchase? Make a list of everything.

Where do you go?

In terms of practicality, your wardrobe must correspond to the areas you'll be visiting. A work outfit differs dramatically from that of a stay-at-home mom or a college student taking classes online. Are you a gym rat who can't get enough of it? Do you live in a tropical climate all year?

Make a list of keywords. If you're stuck, consider the following options: gym, seasonal, business casual, sorority, work from home, and so on.

What kind of person do you want to be?

"Style is a means to communicate who you are without having to talk," Rachel Zoe famously stated. Let's speak about who you want to be now that we've determined what you possess and what scenarios you dress for. If you're a romantic with a soft spot for old books and florals, "cottagecore" could be a good fit for you. Are you a city slicker who likes heeled boots in black, white, and grey? Use adjectives like minimalist, architectural, androgenous, and structured to describe your style. Preppy, North-Eastern, modern bohemian, '70s chic, southern belle, cheerleader-inspired, Y2K, and other keywords may also appeal to you. Combine the ones that stick out — for example, I'd characterize my style as vintage-inspired with a modern touch.

If you want to learn more about establishing your style and become a more aware shopper, I highly suggest Anuschka Rees' book "The Curated Closet." It's a thorough exercise in identifying and describing your style to create a more trimmed, simplified wardrobe. Last but not least, remember that you have complete control over your style, so don't worry if you're wearing American denim one day and a beach-ready maxi skirt the next.
