Most people arrange their house or apartment to respond as much as possible to the needs of space and utility, thinking less about the moments of relaxation so necessary to satisfy the spiritual needs.

There is a space in almost any apartment or house, which can become with a minimum of effort a real oasis of relaxation: the balcony.

Here's what you need to do to get the most out of your balcony:

Choose a style that characterizes you

Before you start remodeling the balcony, think about what you want it to look like at the end.

Do you want to remember the holidays at sea? Then choose marine colors and decorations: blue, white, seashells. Or maybe you want something modern and minimalist. In this case, you have to choose furniture elements made of glass, metal, and neutral colors.

Analyze the available space

In all the choices you will make, for the result to be the desired one, you must take into account the conditions in your balcony:

How many hours does the sunshine on the balcony?

Does it accumulate when it rains?

Does the wind blow often?

The answers to these questions will help you choose the right plants, decide whether or not you need umbrellas, parasols, or screens.

The maintenance of this space after it has been arranged should not require too much effort, otherwise, the purpose for which you have done all the work would be lost.

The floor and the walls

Most of the time, the balconies are quite small or narrow and long. We must avoid choosing colors or materials that make the space look even smaller than it is.

The floor can be made of sandstone or wood. Tiles can be easily cleaned, but wood is a warmer material that offers increased comfort compared to tiles. Whatever you choose, it should be as dark as possible, because they give the feeling of width.

Also to create the feeling of more space, the walls must be in contrast with the floor, so orient yourself towards a light shade.

Furniture

The recommendation, in the case of furniture, is to choose small objects, without exaggerating. If the furniture is too big, then the balcony will seem cramped, you will not have enough space to move and discomfort will appear.

One or two armchairs or a bench and a coffee table are enough if you have a small balcony. Focus on decorations to personalize the space.

The materials from which the furniture elements are made are very varied, each having its advantages and disadvantages.

You can choose:

  • the wood, which is very attractive, but must be taken care of periodically so as not to rot
  • plastic, which is much cheaper, but not too elegant
  • metal, which is very elegant, but it is also the most expensive material.

In choosing plants, the initial stage of your "project" is very important: the analysis of the space and the conditions you have. You need to choose flowers that do not require much maintenance and are not too pretentious.

If the sun is shining on your balcony for many hours a day, then either avoid shade-loving plants or buy a sunshade to protect the balcony from the sun's rays.

Sun-loving plants are petunias, cacti, geraniums, orchids.

Shade-loving plants are azaleas, pansies, ferns, autumn lilies, hydrangeas.

If you want to have a green balcony all year round, then a smart choice is small conifers, such as thuja. You can tune them every year so that their size remains appropriate for your space.

Do you think that the space is too small to be transformed into a flower garden? You need to know that there are solutions for you too! Use planters that hang outside the balcony and shelves or shelves to display the plants in height.

The personal impression of the arrangement of the balcony is given by the choice of decorations.

Do you want to look like a sailor? You can buy or make your decorative objects from seashells, starfish, net-nets, miniature ships.

Although not many people do this, the balcony can be transformed into an extremely personal space, where they can easily find their place: lanterns, scented candles, paintings, or framed photographs.
