The Difference Between Top and Front Load

Traditionally speaking, washing machines were designed to scrub clothes with soap in a tub of water. But with all the technological advancements we’ve been witnessing since then, washing machines have changed as well.

If you’re planning to replace your old washing machine and wondering if you can go with a completely different style this time, you need to understand the difference between the most two common styles of washers: Top Load and Front Load Washers.

In this article, we'll take a look at the major differences between a top-load and front-load washers. The two types of washing machines do the job when it comes to washing clothes and removing stains. The difference that you see so far is where the door is, but what you really need to know is which one is the right choice for you, your budget and your house.

Top Loaders Have Agitators

Most top load washers have an agitator, which helps beat clothes against it to remove stains and help get the detergent through the fabric. Top loaders are still gentle on clothes, while those with agitators are not.

Front load washers are agitator-free, they depend on spinning and tumbling of clothes inside the drum to help get oils and stains out. They also clean more efficiently than a top loader. As long as you use them right and don’t over stuff them, the detergent will be able to penetrate the fabric effectively and cleans it through.

Front Loaders Save Water

While it really all depends on the size and capacity of the washer, front load washers usually handle more load than top washers, they also use less water than top washers. Top Load Washers’ process is typically filing up the drum with water till the clothes start floating to help them move around better, it uses around 113-150 liters of water; on the other hand, front load washers use only 37-56 liters of water. This way your water bill will be lower and to top that off, front load washers use less energy to heat the water.

Top Loaders Save You Money on the Long Run

Front load washers are more pricey than top loaders, they do save you more energy and water, however, the act of maintaining a front loader over the years with maintenance fees and repairs, definitely costs more as it is more prone to accumulate mold if they’re not cleaned properly from time to time. On the other hand, top loaders cost less and will last a decade or even longer, thus saving you money over the years.

Top Loaders Use Less Time per Cycle

If you’re someone who’s always in a hurry to get your laundry done, a top loader is the right choice for you; in comparison with front loaders, top loaders save so much time as they don’t go through the process of entering the water through the drum then draining them out several times. A top loader has faster cycles as it only fills up the drum one time per cycle.

Front Loaders Gives More Space

Not everyone has a room just for laundry, a front load washer is a great choice if you’re short on space at your home. It doesn’t need space above it to open it up and start inserting your laundry, you just load it from the front while you can use all the space above it for other purposes.
