When it comes to painting your roof, you must ensure that you have taken the required precautions. While it may be a good idea to hire a contractor to paint the whole home, some prefer to do it on their own. If that sounds similar, then chances are that you are planning to handle it on your own and in the process, save a bundle from having to hire a professional painter. This is why it is necessary to check out these tips before you try painting the roof on your own.

  • Choose the right paint: If this is your first time painting the roof, then you must select the right kind of paint to get your roof painted. You are bound to be aware that there are both water-based paints and oil-based ones, apart from this, you would have to work out the type of surface that your roof consists of, from cement tiles to stucco and even clay tiles, etc. Apart from this, you may have to consult a professional painter or an expert, regarding roof painting in Auckland. Bottom line, you need to select the right kind of paint for this DIY project; you can even go for acrylic paint, as they are water-based and suitable for most surfaces. Keep in mind that using synthetic solvents is a health hazard so you may want to avoid it altogether when mixing your paints.

Prep the surface: Granted that clambering on the roof is bound to seem like a herculean task for you. But climbing onto the roof is just a small part of it. You would be required to prep the surface well enough and in the process, clean it, remove all the dust and grime and even any rust that may linger onto the surfaces. One easy way to go about it would be to opt for metal brushes and sugar soap solutions; this should enable you to clean and remove all the dirt, grime et al, from the roof altogether. And before you start cleaning the roof, make sure that you attach a safety harness to your belt and anchor it to a stable part of the roof as an additional safety measure.

UV resistant: When selecting the paint, make sure that you choose one that is UV resistant. If you happen to live in a place that seems its fair share of sunny days, it would make sense to opt for paint that is UV resistant. This would ensure that your paint stays on for a long while and it should not fade away after just a couple of summers.

Choose the right time: If you are all set to paint your roof, make sure that it is not in the midst of winter or during the rainy season. Nothing is worse than getting your roof painted only to have all that paint washed away, with a heavy downpour. So make sure that you opt to paint the roof during summer and when humidity is at its lowest. Now, you can go about painting your roof, and even opt for a slow drying one. That way, you can go ahead with a second application after the first one has truly set and this should help make your roof stand apart.

Spray paint: This may sound like the ideal solution, just check in with the nearest hardware store for spray paint rentals and find out if they offer spraying machines on a rental basis. Or you could always purchase one; most come with a spraying wand with which you can get the roof painted in no time at all. Sure, you can go ahead and paint your roof the traditional way, with paintbrushes and paint rollers. But that process is bound to take anywhere from 3-5 days.

These are some of the essential tips that you need to review before you move on to painting your roof.
