Best Ways to Move

Bought yourself a new home and planning to move? Whether you rent a moving truck or hire a professional mover, there are some things you should do to prepare for their arrival.

In case you have chosen the best ways to move and hired experienced movers for your move, you certainly don't want to spend any more money than necessary. Being prepared will help you to stick to your moving budget and save you from any last-minute surprises. The key is to spend only what was in the moving company quotes, and not to pay high labour fees for things you should have done yourself. And if you are driving the truck rental yourself, then being prepared will keep you to your schedule and you will not risk extra fees by returning the truck rental late.

Here are a few productive ways that can help you prepare for the arrival of your professional movers:

1. Let your neighbours on either side of your home know that the moving truck will be parked on the road. Hopefully, they will not park their vehicles in the area of the truck, leaving everyone ample room to navigate.

2. Clear out your driveway so there is a path to the moving van. The area from the house to the moving truck should be free of obstacles. Remember, whichever door of the house is being used to remove your belongings when loading the truck, or conversely placing items when off-loading the moving truck, should be held open with a cord or rope.

3. Mark off the moving truck parking area with cones, metal triangles or chairs. You certainly don't want others taking the space so that when the moving truck arrives, there is nowhere for the driver to park it. By reserving the truck space, you are ready in advance. Also, if your move requires using a smaller truck that will park in your driveway, then remove other vehicles so the truck can be placed as close to the open door of the house as possible. There is no sense in carrying the load farther than required.

4. If you are moving in an apartment or office complex, book the elevator on the day of the move at your current location and also on the day of the arrival of the moving truck at your new home.

5. Be thoroughly packed before the movers arrive. The more you have to complete, the longer it will take to load and secure the truck, and the more it is going to cost you especially in case of local movers since they charge by the hours. Even long distance movers might charge you extra for delaying the move. So, don't ignore anything, since any insignificant tasks could add up to extra time in the end.

6. All the moving boxes should be properly closed and securely taped. When professional movers arrive, they take things the way they are, and if since you have packed yourself, you will be responsible for the damage. For better packing and insurance coverage, you can always hire full-service movers.

7. Do not leave things lying around on the floor for movers and helpers to fall over. Moving and packing produce a lot of junk on the floor. Make sure to pick up all such items and place them inside a plastic crate or cardboard box to prevent serious accidents.

8. Label all your moving boxes and the wrappings in advance so that when the moving team arrives at the new destination, it is clear where the boxes and other stuff should go.

9. Store all your valuables in a safe place. Do not leave them where they can be stolen, lost or accidentally placed on the moving truck where you will not be able to find them. If the truck is going to be in transit for a week or more, you will have an excruciatingly long wait wondering what happened to your precious items.

10. If you have kids, make sure they are staying safe inside a room and they are not playing near the road or trying to climb into the back of the rental truck. Likewise, if you are a pet owner, place your beloved pet in a secure area so that he does not escape through the open house door. If you are moving locally, you can consider leaving your ward or pet at your friends or family home.

11. Make sure all the items that are not going on the moving truck are placed in a separate area, clearly marked, so they don't get loaded onto the truck. A simple solution is to keep all such items together that do not belong on the moving truck and rope the area off, so there is no question about where these items are going.

12. Lastly, don't forget to pack an essential bag, no matter whether you are moving locally or long distance. This way when you will arrive at your new location, things will seem less chaotic. This essential bag should include all the necessary items like beddings, cleaning supplies, toolkits, scissors, paper plates, flashlight, phone charger, toiletry essentials and other such items.

Like any other project, planning and good organization will help you to save time and money on your move. If you are moving valuables or important documents, dealing with these items in advance will save you the potential heartache and stress of thinking they are lost. In addition, if you require any of your receipts or moving paperwork along the way, you should know where it is at all times so you can get your hands on it quickly. Be prepared, be safe. Happy moving!
