If you're planning to paint your home, then you should know that it's both hard and challenging. And that's why it's better to leave it to the professionals. For example, did you know that professional painters use drop cloths, golf balls, and even painter's tape? But if you still intend to tackle the project on your own, then you need to read on.

DIY home painting can be downright difficult especially if you don't have a clue on how to go about it. That's why it makes sense to search online for house painters in Auckland. But if you're still set to go ahead with your DIY project, you'll need to check out these tips.

  • Don't waste the paint: One of the ways that most DIY painters waste paint is by letting it dry out. Paint is expensive and as a DIY painter, you need to be careful as to how you end up using the paint. One trick you can use is to use golf balls to fill up the air space, and a film cover for the opening. This should help prevent the paint from drying out in the can. Most amateur painters end up wasting so much paint by needlessly letting it dry out.
  • Do a visual inspection: As you search online for house painters, you are bound to come across this tip as well. Each time you set out to paint your home, do a thorough visual inspection as well as preparatory work. Note down the areas where the paint is cracked or flaking off; you’ll need to scrape and sand off the old paint before you can apply a fresh coat. Remember that you’ll have to apply a fresh primer before you apply the new paint.
  • Use good quality: When it comes to painting your home, quit pinching pennies. Splurge both on paint as well as paintbrushes, rollers, painter’s tape, and associated merchandise. You’ll need them all, and using good brushwork always shows when it comes to painting.
  • Thick walls require more: The thicker your walls are, the more texture they are bound to have and that is why, when it comes to painting these walls, you’ll need a thick nap. The thick nap should be perfect to reach into cracks, crevices and it should give you the perfect finish - the sort you require for a thickset wall.
  • Use covers: Be it the walls or the floors, it is always a good idea to use covers to cover up those areas that you do not want any paint on. It is a good idea to get the covers on at the start, as you do the preparatory work on the walls.
  • Remove the electrical switches: Before you start painting, it would be a good idea to remove the light switchboard area and to clean up the wall area as well. Just make sure that there is no dark patch left on the wall before you start. And you'll need to turn the power off, as you start painting.
  • the right Primer: As you shop for paint, you are bound to find that most come in a paint-primer combination. That's fine, but if it has been more than a few years since you had painted last, it would be advisable to use a primer on its own, rather than in combination with paint. But make sure that you don't penny-pinch when it comes to primers or paint.
  • By the gallon: And when painting your rooms, have a proper plan instead of painting haphazardly. Make sure that you purchase the right amount of paint and put it all in a container. That is, if you are about to set out to paint the living room, you would have estimated a certain amount, right? Now, separate that amount and pour it all in a single container; this is called boxing the paint. This ensures that you use the right amount of paint and that there is no wastage.

These are some of the essential techniques, tips, and tricks when it comes to home painting.
