Take a look on instagram and you'll see that black wallpaper is becoming a 'thing' - just search dark decor and you'll find all kinds of real life examples.

And it's certainly not just the vampires and the rock fans that are embracing this design trend. Believe it or not, black wallpaper can create a wonderfully coy feel - and is much lower risk than painting your pristine walls!

Let's take a look at some beautiful black homes...

Black wallpaper is a growing trend

The dark world of black wallpaper

Most interiors articles are obsessed with white - it's the best way to create space, bring in the light and get that scandi feel.

But have you ever thought about going to the other end of the spectrum and embracing black as a signature colour? It's a bold look that can really work for all kinds of interiors.

And it doesn’t always have to feel dark in a room with black walls. In the room below a dark wall has been combined amongst a much lighter setting and light walls, the over-all feeling being spacious and airy. Pops of colour and inviting textures give the space a multiple sensory experience. Lovely!

Choosing a black wallpaper design

There are so many black wallpapers to choose from. If you live in an older home you might like to add a touch of vintage style with some black panelling wallpaper - designed to look like traditional wood panelling.

Trompe L'Oeil wallpaper is a growing trend - with panelling a great example. You can also find wallpaper designed to look like a bookcase, or a padded leather chair, or even metal trelliswork.

Or, you could explore softer designs like a floral or botanical black wallpaper like the example below. Black floral wallpaper is rapidly growing in popularity thanks to its blend of 'statement' and beauty.

Black and white wallpaper can also make a big style statement in your home, from geometric patterns to damask designs.

Which rooms work best with black wallpaper?

Black wallpaper works in many different spaces in your home. In a bedroom, dark walls help create a relaxing atmosphere, perfect for snuggling down at the end of a long day.

Dark walls in your dining room bring a dramatic and intimate atmosphere. Team them up with shining tableware, good lighting and, of course, candles, and you'll be sitting around the dining table into the small hours.

In a living room, black walls can again bring cosiness and elegance all year round. And black works equally well in a bathroom - dare to be different!

There are so many visualising apps these days that its easy to take a virtual look at whether you'll like the dark decor trend. Download an app, take a picture of your room and apply all kinds of shades and colours. You'll be impressed by how easy it is to get a whole new look for your room.

The next step is to order wallpaper samples. This is really important - the design and texture of wallpaper designs will look different in every space. The lighting, the reflections and the influence of your furniture and other features can all have an effect on how each sample will look. Leave the samples pinned to your walls for a while to see how they appear at different times of the day.
