With spring 2021 almost here, many people will be thinking about cleaning and refreshing their homes. With that in mind, here are some of the key bedroom trends for 2021.

Multifunctionality by design

Up until the pandemic, multifunctionality in bedrooms was often something which ended up happening by accident rather than a feature of the design. Now, people are much more aware of the importance of creating options in which to achieve a space of calm and relaxation during isolation.

In 2021, bedrooms are increasingly likely to be designed so that they can also function as offices and/or gyms. This will involve choosing furniture which looks bedroom-appropriate but also functions well practically. For example, dressing tables will function as desks and attractive cabinets will hold gym equipment.

True multifunctional spaces have to be able to transition seamlessly from one function to another. Part of making this happen involves eliminating clutter. This means that the trend towards streamlined, minimalist-leaning spaces looks set to continue.

Comfort as a top priority

Comfort has long been important in bedrooms, but 2021 will see this go to a new level. In-particular wooden headboards and chairs are likely to be swapped out for upholstered ones. If this is not possible, e.g., budget is tight, then they’ll be softened with plenty of pillows and cushions.

There will be a new emphasis on bedding. This will go right from the mattress itself to the pillows and duvet to the sheets, covers and blankets. In addition to looking for objective marks of quality (and hence comfort), people will also be looking for luxury touches. In particular, there will be a lot of emphasis on texture. In 2021, bedding will feel at least as good as it looks.

Lots of light colours

There will always be a place for dark and cosy bedrooms, but in 2021 they will be very much a niche. Most people will be looking to open up spaces with light, bright and natural colours. White, cream and grey are always on-trend. White will continue to be especially popular for bedding. Green is also shaping up to be a major trend in 2021.

The emphasis on lightness will go beyond just the choice of colour. There will be an overall rethink of bedroom lighting and hence bedroom lights and window treatments. The light fixtures themselves may stay the same, but whenever possible, standard light bulbs will be switched out for smart ones.

This will create several benefits. Firstly, there’s the convenience of being able to control them remotely. Secondly, there’s the ability to brighten and dim them easily (and, again, remotely). Thirdly, you can have much more control over the colour. In particular, you can change it to suit your needs, wants and/or mood.

Window treatments will remain one area where darkness is embraced, particularly in summer. Blackout curtains are, however, more likely to be paired with net curtains to allow people to combine privacy with light if they wish.

Plants and natural materials

This isn’t really a new trend for 2021. It’s an established one which just keeps on growing. Real plants will always be the winners here, but they aren’t for everyone. That’s why there are faux options. There are also lots of ways to give a nod to the botanical look without actually having any plants in your bedroom, real or faux.

The extensive use of natural materials ties in with multiple trends. These include the plant trend, the emphasis on texture, minimalism, and the idea of the bedroom as a retreat. It also links with the overarching trend of sustainability.

The bedroom as a retreat

In 2021, many bedrooms are having to serve as a place to work, a place to work out and a place to retreat from work. A lot of the key interior trends reflect the idea of a bespoke bedroom as a place of escape.

For example, hotel chic, spa vibes and beach vibes are all huge. They are even bigger if you include variations on them such as Zen, hygge, Scandi and Japandi.
