Remodeling can be a great way to improve your overall happiness with the way your bathroom looks. From simple changes like paint color, to more difficult updates like light fixtures or changing the tile, to a full blown replacement of the bathtub, sink, and toilet, your bathroom can become a reflection of your personal style. But what can you do if you rent your home and really can’t make any of those major changes? There are ways to give your rented bathroom a hefty dose of your personality without violating your lease.

The simplest and most obvious option is choosing towels, floor mats and a shower curtain that you love. Other bathroom accessories like soap dishes, toothbrush holders, etc. can help pull the whole look together and make it a room you like. Many stores have pre-matched sets grouped together in their bathroom décor section making it easy to find everything you’d need. It also makes it easy if you’re working with a smaller budget, to buy a few pieces at a time, rather than having to buy everything all at once. Don’t be afraid to branch out from the pre-designed sets and choose other pieces that match or contrast. You want your décor to be a reflection of your personality, not the corporate designers.

Another seemingly obvious way to decorate your bathroom is with wall art. There are a variety of products available for hanging pictures on your walls without using nails. If your bathroom is small and/or dark, try hanging a grouping of smaller mirrors across from the main mirror in your bathroom. This optical effects of the smaller mirrors not only help make the room feel larger, they reflect the existing light in the room making it feel brighter too.

Shelving can make a huge difference in the appearance of the room and provide handy additional storage space. Several online retailers offer shelves that can be hung without using nails or screws that are perfect for smaller, lightweight decorative items. These shelves are easy to install, easy to remove and don’t damage the walls. Perfect for the bathrooms, and other rooms, for people who rent rather than own.

Over-the-toilet storage shelves are another great way to add a decorative and practical touch to your bathroom. These stand-alone shelves come in a wide variety of styles, shapes and colors, from straight shelves to cupboards, to fit with almost any design aesthetic. They range in price from around $28.00 to $200.00 so they are a perfect design tool for any budget. Most of the big name home improvement retailers offer selection with many other options available through their online ordering options and other online retailers.

Don’t be afraid to be creative. There can be something comforting and homey about houseplants. Pots and planters are available in a wide range of colors and patterns to go with the décor of your bathroom. Small battery operated water fountains can add to the outdoor feel and are relatively inexpensive. Candles in bathrooms are fairly commonplace now and in addition to being decorative, the scented ones can help take care of other side effects resulting from bathroom use.

Whether you own or are renting, there are a number of options available for decorating your home or apartment to reflect your personal taste and personality without full blown remodel. These suggestions don’t have to be limited to your bathroom. They can work in any room of your home. The key is finding creative solutions to decorating that are not only lease friendly but won’t cost you an arm and a leg either. No matter how you choose to decorate, the important thing is to have fun with it and make your home a place you are comfortable and happy to be.
