There’s no doubt that taking some time for yourself is important. But it can be hard to find the time or energy to do it.

Between work, family, and other obligations, there never seems to be enough hours in the day. And when we finally do have a little downtime, we often feel guilty for not using it more productively.

But carving out some time each day just for you is crucial if you want to maintain your sanity and well-being. Here are a few tips on how to make that happen.

1. Schedule it in advance

One of the best ways to make sure you actually take some time for yourself is to plan for it in advance. Put it in your calendar as if it were any other appointment. That way, you’re more likely to stick to it.

Scheduling time for yourself can also help you feel less guilty about taking a break. You deserve it! Just as you would never cancel an important meeting, don’t cancel on yourself either.

2. Choose an activity that brings you joy

When you do have some free time, make sure you spend it doing something that makes you happy. This can be anything from reading a book to going for a walk outdoors. Don't choose something that you feel like you should be doing, like working out or cleaning the house. The whole point is to relax and recharge.

Do whatever brings you joy and makes you feel relaxed. This is your time to recharge, so make the most of it.

3. Make it a priority

It’s also important to make sure that you prioritize your own well-being. That means not always putting everyone else’s needs first. You need to take care of yourself before you can take care of others.

So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember to take a step back and focus on taking care of yourself first. Only then will you be able to show up for the people and things that matter most in your life.

4. Set boundaries

In order to make time for yourself, you need to set some boundaries. This means saying no to things that you don’t have time for or that don’t align with your goals. For example, if you’re invited to a last-minute happy hour, but you’ve already planned to have some alone time, don’t feel guilty about saying no.

It also means setting limits on how much time you’re willing to spend on work or other obligations. Make sure you leave some room in your schedule for leisure and relaxation.

5. Take a break

Don’t be afraid to take a break when you need it. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, step away from whatever is causing those feelings. Take a few deep breaths and allow yourself some time to relax. It’s okay to take a break from time to time. This doesn’t make you lazy or unproductive. In fact, it’s quite the opposite - taking a break can help you come back feeling refreshed and ready to tackle whatever is ahead.

6. Be patient

If you’re having trouble making time for yourself, be patient. It might take some time to get used to the idea of taking care of yourself first. But eventually, it will become second nature and you’ll start to feel better as a result.

7. Don’t be too hard on yourself

Last but not least, don’t be too hard on yourself. We all have bad days and there will be times when we can’t stick to our goals. When that happens, just remember that tomorrow is a new day. You can always start fresh and try again. Even the best of us have off days, so cut yourself some slack.

Making time for yourself can be tough, but it’s so important for your well-being. Scheduling some "me" time into your day is a must. Just make sure you choose an activity that brings you joy, set some boundaries, and be patient with yourself. You’ve got this!
