6 Reasons Why Adult Coloring Books Are So Worth It

Just Like Therapy, But Without The Stigma.

Different colors do convey different meanings. If someone was to ask you what color you are today; you'll generally respond in kind in relation to the mood you're in at said given moment.

It's obvious that adult coloring in books and templates want you to think of the colors of the rainbow and beyond; otherwise the expenditure of your time, and for the necessary tools (think pencils, pencil sharpener and the book itself) would be rendered worthless.

Most adults (myself included) dislike being bossed around. You do have to color in between the lines, and you don't have to either. You can draw images in largish spaces in your template, in addition to coloring in.

There is a reason why TV shows and photographs are in color today. Color is relaxing to the soul. Apart from coloring up your lifestyle; the benefits of coloring in as an adult are plentiful.

1. Reduces stress and anxiety

When you sit down with your favorite coloring in book, perhaps plonked on your sofa with your favorite cup of tea; you cannot help but slow things down. Your parasympathetic nervous system gets to re-set. You're present, mindful, and in the flow. Nothing else matters.

2. Calms the mind

When your monkey mind and lizard brains are tamed, your mind settles down (and so does the ego). You get a break from the constant plethora of thoughts. In these tough times that we're living in right now (thank you COVID-19, as at the time of writing this) coloring in has been a godsend - even to the point where I forget about the coronavirus for a couple of hours a day in self isolation at home.

3. Promotes restful sleep

As your stress and anxiety levels (to name) have settled down; this paves the way for a restful sleep. While coloring in, the screens don't even matter. It gives your eyes a break, and therefore you become more rested come night time.

4. Improves focus

By being present, coloring in has helped yours truly be more focused and patient; especially with those smaller spaces. You intuitively know which colors work together, and you know when to sharpen a blunt pencil for greater precision. These skills help you in business, and in life.

5. Saves you money

If cash flow is a challenge right now, you can simply go out and buy all the tools you need for the cost of one yoga session; and these tools last longer than an hour. A great way to span out $30 for your mindfulness. Way cheaper than therapy too.

6. A portable activity

If you wish to travel, or spend some time away from home; you can take your tools with you and enjoy some affordable mindfulness on the go.

Furthermore, depending on you, you could even win a prize for your coloring in efforts. Coloring in competitions do exist. What started out as a $1000 project enabled yours truly to win a set of coloring pencils, and a 12-month subscription to a wellness magazine, where one of my finished templates was chosen from an Instagram post for this prize. At the time I would color in a page from a positivity coloring in book every time I paid $1000 off my mortgage, and then shared it with the world one insta post at a time.

Give it a try. Coloring in may not be for you, yet you don't know unless you give it a real red hot go.
